recovery time?

i read a tek in which you wait for the mycelium to recover before adding the top casing layer. is this recover time needed or can my friend just cover the substrate right away?

If you're talking about the time between breaking the cakes up and actually covering them with casing material then:

Most people will say that it works best if you wait until the mycelium starts grown again before you add the casing layer. Usually, this take 2-3 days, waiting until the mycelium starts to get fuzy and begings to grow together. Apparently this lets the mycelium get a head start before you actually being the casing process

I'm not sure if it actually makes a difference. My friend has tried both ways and really doesn't see a marked difference, certainly not enough to justify the added time waiting for the myco to start growing again. If, when you break the cakes up, the myco is really blue and looks pretty damaged, it would probably be a good idea. However, if you cut the cake into slices and simply fill in the holes with fragmented cakes then it probably isn't necessary

I've wondered this myself, can anyone offer quantitative proof as to wether this makes a difference or not?

Grover

the substate is wheat berries and there is no significant sign of damage (bluing). i think my friend is going to finish the casing yet tonight. unless somebody posts with a real bad experience in the next hour or so.

If you're using wheat berries, I'd definitely make sure it recovers before casing. That substrate easily contaminates.
