how do you all get your sawdust to the proper moisture?

i tried soaking then straining but i guess i didnt strain enough because my stuff looks rather wet..

people just say add water till wet but what the heck does that mean!

you need to take 100g of your sawdust and put it on a baking sheet in the oven on low for 20 mins - keep checking it's not burning - then weigh it again. if it now weighs 84g, that means it was 16g water, or 16%. work from here:

now go back to your bag of sawdust, and weigh it- say it weighs 1kg. to get this to 65%, you'd need to add water by doing a little maths. adding 140g (140ml) of water per 100g gets it up to 84/240 = 0.35 solids, or 0.65 water.

thus 1000g sawdust (containing 840g excluding all water) + 1400ml water = 840g dry substance/2400g wet weight = 65% moisture, a good number to aim for. do some tweaking with your own numbers, and check it again twice - you can tie yourself up in knots doing this!

This is what works for me. I usually put sawdust in a big pot or bucket & then put water in it to just over the level of the sawdust after the sawdust & water is stirred together. I usually let it soak overnight. Then after it has soaked I pour the excess water off & prop the bucket or pot up on a board or something so the water continues to drain off, push the sawdust to the higher side of the bucket or pot. I let this drain for a couple of minutes but not too long. Then I prepare it for sterilization, so far after sterilization it's been pretty good (not too wet & not dry)
