Music inspired by LSD
    #4244919 - 06/01/05 04:13 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hey guys I'm looking to start a collection of music inspired by LSD.

If you could help me compile a list of songs (with artists) either about LSD or inspired by it I would really appreciate it.

Thanks ahead of time.

edited to fix grammar (once again) and the gay title

Sgt Peppers without a doubt. It may not have been directly influenced, but it was going on at the time, man.

Your not gonna get any solid for sures. You can say, they were doing LSD at the time but to get just LSD inspired music is to get life inspired music. Anyway:
The Grateful Dead
Jimi Hendrix
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin
The Rolling Stones
The Doors

Need I go on? Most bands have at least a psychedelic album.

More modern:
The Mars Volta
The Flaming Lips
String Cheese Incident

Most bands, good ones anyway, are usually influenced by drugs. Not just LSD, though.

What about more specific songs that are about an LSD trip?

For instance Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by The Beatles.

"Tomorrow Never Knows" by The Beatles.
"Are You Experienced" by Hendrix
"Break On Through" by The Doors

Really though, look up any album made between 66-68 and you'll find what you're looking for.

Get the song "The greatest pac-man victory in history" by Aesop Rock.  It's about a summer where one of his friends wanted to beat the arcade game pac-man while tripping on acid.  Aesop Rock already has a very heavily psychedelic stream of consciousness dadist ish style, and it works here.  There is one part where he goes on for a minute at breakneck speed and every three word set starts with L-S-D.  Lost Summers Display Late Show Dave Letterman Shitty Diner Life sucks dickhead lost system definitife or something like that, and he just tears it up and goes on forever, and you're just like .  It's really quite good.  If you really hate rap music, you should be doubly sure to check it out because it will encourage you to listen to more aesop rock and he is so good.

I think the best songs influenced by psychedelics are the songs not directly about the psychedelics.  Something like most of Lateralus is very heavy on the psychedelic flavor, but has a psychedelic take on stuff that isn't psychedelics.  Do you want this sort of thing too?

I think the LSD music of the 90s and 00s is going to be a lot better then the classic stuff. The guys in the 90s and 00s have a lot more freedom because they have access to so many more options and much better technology, allowing them to better realize their vision. Not to knock on the 60s stuff, but Tool's third eye (another one that should be on your list), or much of the IDM stuff just tears the shit out of the 60s stuff. That sort of music just seems so much more aware to me. I dunno. I really like the old stuff too, don't get me wrong.

"Are You Experienced" by Hendrix

Yep, that one talks about having taken acid and it's trying to explain how it is... but there are trippier songs by him, IMEO. "Have you ever been" also talks about it:

Quote:

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN (TO ELECTRIC LADYLAND) Lyrics

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN?
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN, TO ELECTRIC LADYLAND?

THE MAGIC CARPET WAITS FOR YOU
SO DON'T YOU BE LATE
OH

I WANT TO SHOW YOU
DIFFRENT EMOTIONS
I WANT TO LEARN YOU
THE SOUNDS AND MOTONS

ELECTRIC WOMEN WAITS FOR YOU AND ME
SO IT'S TIME WE TAKE A RIDE

WHILE WE FLY OVER THE LOVE FILLED SEA
LOOK UP AHEAD
I SEE THE LOVE LAND
SO DO YOU UNDERSTAND?

MAKE LOVE MAKE LOVE...

I WANT TO SHOW YOU
ANGELS WILL SPREAD THEIR WINGS, SPREAD THEIR WINGS
I WANT TO SHOW YOU
GOOD AND EVIL LAY SIDE BY SIDE
WHILE ELECTRIC LOVE PENETRATES THE SKY
I WANT TO SHOW YOU
I WANT TO SHOW YOU
I WANT TO SHOW YOU
I WANNA SHOW YOU

Quote:

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? Lyrics

IF YOU CAN JUST GET YOUR MIND TOGETHER
THEN COME ON ACROSS TO ME
WE'LL HOLD HANDS AND THEN WE'LL WATCH
THE SUN RISE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA
BUT FIRST

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?
AH HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EXPERIENCED?
WELL I HAVE

I KNOW I KNOW
YOU'LL PROBABLY SCREAM AND CRY
THAT YOUR LITTLE WORLD WON'T LET YOU GO
BUT WHO IN YOUR MEASLY LITTLE WORLD ARE TRYING TO PROVE THAT
YOUR'RE MADE OUT OF GOLD AND CAN'T BE SOLD

SO A ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EXPERIENCED?
WELL, I HAVE

AH LET ME PROVE IT TO YOU

TRUMPETS AND VIOINS I CAN A HEAR IN THE DISTANCE
I THINK THEY'RE CALLING OUR NAMES
MAYBE NOW YOU CAN'T HEAR THEM BUT YOU WILL HAHA
IF YOU JUST TAKE HOLD OF MY HAND

OH BUT ARE YOU EXPERIENCED?
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN EXPERIENCED?

NOT NECESSARILY STONED BUT BEAUTIFUL

But still 1983 is the best option
Seriously.

lyrics about lsd and music form the time aren't really lsd inspired to me. i think lsd is generally beyond conventional music anyway

why limit to that substance anyway?

Well, that's what he says... Sure he started with the drawing, but when you're writting a song you DO notice those things. I think he just lied about it

At least Hendrix didn't try to hide obvious things

Not exactly limiting to LSD. LSD has a very special place in my heart and mind that's all. Any suggestions are open though.

Yeah, I also knew about it, but still... I don't know, he MUST have noticed it was there. I see two action cuorses from there:
-Keep it that way intentionally, knowing it had LSD on it and as a hint
-or just leave it like that not caring about it.

But I'm sure he knew about it when he wrote it, that's all I'm saying.

Not saying you're wrong but couldnt the song be one big metaphor?

The Beatles were very talented. I am sure the song could have multiple meanings to it.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Alright that's a very interesting coincidence indeed.

:sun:

Edit:

Quote:

Some have suggested the song refers to drug use, pointing out that the initials of the title are "LSD" and the lyrics are psychedelic. Lennon and the Beatles, who were often frank about their drug use, denied the song had anything to do with that. However, during a newspaper interview in 2004, McCartney was quoted as saying, "Day Tripper, that's one about acid. Lucy in the Sky, that's pretty obvious. ...There's others that make subtle hints about drugs, but, you know, it's easy to overestimate the influence of drugs on the Beatles' music."

Taken from the above link.

I believe it has multiple meanings also. Either way very good song.

"Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.

{REFRAIN}
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Ah... Ah...

{VERSE 2}
Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies,
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers,
That grow so incredibly high.
Newspaper taxis appear on the shore,
Waiting to take you away.
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds,
And you're gone.

{REFRAIN}

Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

{REFRAIN REPEATED AND FADED}"

Dark Star

Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes.
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis.
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion.
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter.
Glass hand dissolving to ice petal flowers revolving.
Lady in velvet recedes in the nights of goodbye.
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?

the whole psytrance/goatrance genre came out of the common use of psychedelics. lsd is still the general choice in psytrance gatherings. listen to both hallucinogen albums and you'll get the idea. also most artists in the psyambient genre could be said to be lsd inspired. entheogenic, shulman, bluetech, jairamji. check these out.

earlier theres ozric tentacles some fine ass psychedelic rock.

Pretty much anything and everything by RUSH, especially the Moving Pictures album, and most especially, Limelight;

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage

Cast in this unlikely role,
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact

Living in the limelight
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem

Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation
The underlying theme

Living in a fisheye lens
Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
I cant pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend

All the worlds indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each anothers audience
Outside the gilded cage

Limelight

[This is a metaphor for altered-state perception of oneself as an actor-agent inside the mind.]

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage. [mystic insight into the problem of perception/representation, perceptual mental constructs]

Cast in this unlikely role, [compare song Entre Nous] [the ego-agent is logically impossible]
Ill-equipped to act, [the actor agent can't exist and one is frozen in spacetime unable to really change any action]
With insufficient tact,
One must put up barriers [must retain ego-boundary and egoic thinking to stay viable and intact in the form of a coherent person]
To keep oneself intact. [ego dis-integration and cognitive fragmentation during the dissociative state -- loose binding of mental constructs]

Living in the Limelight,
The universal dream [egoic consciousness is a shared dream]
For those who wish to seem. [to seem like inner primary controller-agents rather than puppets of the Ground of Being]
Those who wish to be [who want to be a genuine agent or understand control-agency]
Must put aside the alienation,
Get on with the fascination, [don't be alienated from LSD; be fascinated with it]
The real relation,
The underlying theme. ["look for the *underlying* not the surface themes of these lyrics]

Living in a fisheye lens, [again compare the covers of Rubber Soul and Are You Experienced, and "sunlight on chrome" -- mystic altered-state perceptual distortion]
Caught in the camera eye.
I have no heart to lie, [ego-agent at the core of egoic thinking is a lie, an illusion]
I can't pretend a stranger [in the mystic state the ego is alienated, a stranger, a remote fiction]
Is a long-awaited friend.

All the world's indeed a stage,
And we are merely players, [we ego-agents are illusory]
Performers and portrayers,
Each another's audience
Outside the gilded cage. [of mind, of the wall of perception] [search "prison", "cage"]

I read where Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics to the Grateful Dead song "China Cat Sunflower" while in his room tripping on LSD looking at his cat.

Syd Barrett had said in an interview, that 'See Emily Play' was written after meeting a girl in the woods after a show.

Now i'm pretty sure he was tripping on some LSD at that time..

This is Smashing Pumpkins covering an Animals song (I think, maybe just an Eric Burdon song? don't even know...). It's called Girl Named Sandoz, named after the Swiss company that legally manufactured LSD for decades. Great song!
p.s. Anyone got the original? I'd love to hear it.

The song is clearly about LSD, Paul has even stated that the song is about LSD. Its just so obvious that Im sure John thought itd be funny to tell the squares that its not. Reminds me of when my friends mom told me that the song wasnt about LSD and about a painting, I just laughed getting Johns joke.

LSD.

3) It's never a good time to die.
4) Taking your clothes off will draw attention.
5) Keep your mouth shut at all times while in public.
6) Although you may see things that are not there, you won't NOT see things that are there.
7) Don't forget how to breathe.
8) Only carry: a house-key, some loose change, and your address in your shoe.
9) Nobody can tell that you are tripping until you tell them "I'm tripping".
10) No matter how fucked-up you think you are, you'll eventually come down.

Don't know if this will fit in with the other songs, but believe it or not, the Beach Boys "California Girls" was directly inspired by LSD. It was written during a trip, actually. It kind of gives a new feeling to the song when you listen to it...

Boards of Canada definitely seemed to be inspired from LSD. Os Mutantes are like the Brazilian Beatles, and they definitely took a lot of acid.

Aesop Rock is ridicu-sick. The Mars Volta are IMO the best modern psychedelic band though.

The availability, popularity and quality of psychedelics seems to go down each year since it all started.  Now I've never been a huge fan of mainstream rock but the stuff they play on the new rock station just blows more and more too.  I believe this is no coincidence.  Should I assume it is influenced by bath salts? heh sorry for the bump.  ElstonGunn started it :lsd:
