Learning to use weed as a medicine --edit: eh, the hell with it
    #4244234 - 06/01/05 03:09 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

*original post deleted*

Edit: Well, the discussion I've had since starting this thread has been very illuminating to say the least.

I like weed and that's all there is to it.  As long as I don't let it interfere with what is important to me, I will keep smoking it as long as possible.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  I still think it eases my anxiety and mood swings but that's not why I smoke it.  It makes life more tolerable and fun at the same time.  How can I beat that?  :stoned:

lol WHEN will people realise that this is a load of bull. weed is great, but once you've been to the point where you're smoking all day and you love it that much there is no turning point. it will stay in your mind as one of the ultimate pleasures of life. basically, even if you manage not to smoke...it will still be on your mind. your life will still revolve around it, because it will be on your mind.

seriously, i was the same as you thought it was a great medicine bla bla bla. its NOT. thats an excuse your making yourself to continue smokin that weed that feels soooo good. weed feels good. weed is good with music. weed makes u nostalgic. the anxiety you epxerience comes from yourself, and you should think about changing yourself before you started using "medicine" like weed. if there was any kind of medicine shrooms would be it, because you take them for introspection and such. weed is just something that feels very nice and gives you the impression of feeling something very much deeper than u actually are. in my life ive met two kinds of weed smokers:

1.those who LOVE the weed. we smoke it whenever we can, and make stupid claims to ourself that its helping us or that its a "medicine" like you claim. this is usually just a cover for deeper underlying problems, and eventually our friendships become mostly with pot smokers in which everything evovles around weed.

2.those that smoke moderately, or sumtimes more, simply because its the "thing to do".they hit the js now and again, but they dont truly have the same fascination and adoration for weed that the first group has.

please, stop kidding yourself. look at the facts.most big potheads i kno are either depressed, or have sum other mental ilnesses.

weed is a barrier to ur progress, not something that will help it. the sooner you realise this the sooner you'll move on.get the love of a good girl and you'll see how pathetic, shallow and an easy way out weed is.

I believe it's possible to use weed in moderation.  Are you saying you disagree?

Quote:

the anxiety you epxerience comes from yourself

Well, where else would it come from?

Quote:

and you should think about changing yourself before you started using "medicine" like weed.

I consider weed, like shrooms, a plant ally.  I work daily at bettering how I am, and I consider it a progressive step for myself to understand my motivations behind using weed.  I've been on medication for much of my life and nothing else has helped me help my issues but weed.  NOTICE I said "help me help me."  I'm not an idiot.  I know only *I* can make the change.  Weed has been useful in easing my anxiety about wanting to change.

Quote:

if there was any kind of medicine shrooms would be it, because you take them for introspection and such.

And what if I use weed for the same purpose?  I find it funny that you condemn one drug as a medicine and tote another.  It's all how they are used.

Quote:

weed is just something that feels very nice and gives you the impression of feeling something very much deeper than u actually are.

I see, you're giving me this advice based on YOUR experiences with the plant.  I could say the exact same thing that you wrote above about shrooms.

But I won't, I do believe they too are a form of sacred medicine.

Quote:

1.those who LOVE the weed. we smoke it whenever we can, and make stupid claims to ourself that its helping us or that its a "medicine" like you claim. this is usually just a cover for deeper underlying problems, and eventually our friendships become mostly with pot smokers in which everything evovles around weed.

What about the people who rely on prescription medicine to lead a normal life?  Are they just using medicine as a cover for deeper problems?  Or could it be that they are using their medicine to help them cope with life?  And if the latter is the case, then I see nothing wrong with that.

Oh, and I have lots of friends who aren't pot smokers.  Yet again you seem to believe that you speak for the rest of the world when it comes to weed.  I find that to be a very narrow point of view.

Quote:

please, stop kidding yourself. look at the facts.

Facts?  Hmm...I didn't see any "facts" in your post.  Only a bunch of haphazard assumptions and personal opinions lacking in breadth of view.

Quote:

most big potheads i kno are either depressed, or have sum other mental ilnesses.

Really?  Many sober people I know have similar.  Think it's some sort of huge coincidence?  Like...we're all human??!!

Quote:

weed is a barrier to ur progress, not something that will help it.

When I was abusing weed it was a terrible, foggy barrier.  When I was using it respectfully, it was an ally.  I seek to return to that.

Quote:

the sooner you realise this the sooner you'll move on. get the love of a good girl and you'll see how pathetic, shallow and an easy way out weed is.

  I'm a woman and I'm already married, thanks.

And since you've been so kind to give advice to me, allow me to return the favor:

Try not to assume that everyone in the world uses a drug the same way that you do.  If you're able, try to realize that every human being is different, has different needs and different issues which they will handle and confront in different ways.  Your reply is based only on  a lot of presupposition.

Nonetheless, I value your reply.

I'm not ashamed of smoking weed, but I am ashamed of abusing it.  If treating weed like a medicine can help me moderate my use, then I am thrilled to go down that path.

Hey it's all good man, I do appreciate that you took the time to reply on this topic. I'm willing to admit the possiblity that I am using the "medicine" gig as a way to make toking up permissible to me, but I think I just need to moderate my use. I only desire to live a fulfilled life, anyway I can.

I've always said that the instant a drug becomes negative for me, something has to change. So I'm hoping that developing a greater respect for weed as a medicine will help me in that area.

I want to plug meditation again as a cure for your racing thoughts. If you try sitting and focusing on your breath for 20 minutes a day, your racing thoughts and your anxiety will go down. I don't suggest this as an alternative to weed, just as another thing you can do to help you deal with it. I know this doesn't appeal to you, but your problems about thinking too much about everything are the sorts of problems meditation can help. Also, if you stick with it, you will be surprised at the altered states you can enter (but which you should not focus on) from it.

Part of treating weed like medicine is exploring alternate avenues which can help you reduce your dependence on it.

Quite the contrary, I've been doing breathing exercises for about six months now, just focusing on my breath as a form of meditation.  I find doing this very helpful, especially at the beginning of an anxiety attack, and I can sometimes calm myself doing this.  When I am in that "fight or flight" mode though it's sometimes hard to find my focus.

Hmm...thank you, that is exactly what I am trying to do.

I would like to make a more serious effort at meditation.  I've been wanting to try yoga for awhile now, which I think would also benefit me greatly.

maybe it's just because you usually smoke a lot and don't smoke now that it seems like that. Don't let the weed trick you... (I'm serious)

This is the book that got me started.  It's cheap.  Go buy it and give it a once over.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books

"Here is one of the most practical guides to meditation. As a psychotherapist and researcher, Lawrence LeShan is more interested in the process and effects of meditation than the spiritual motivations. To LeShan, meditation means training the mind, and he likens it to physical exercise. Like a good trainer, he breaks down the different kinds of meditation into easy-to-learn steps and offers counsel about the best ways to go about it and the pitfalls you are likely to encounter. LeShan isn't pure vanilla, however. He wrote at a time (the early '70s) when meditation was still considered esoteric and strongly associated with the paranormal. Still, he keeps his feet on the ground and suggests that you do, too. Meditation, he says, helps get a new perspective on the world and to attain "an increased serenity and competence in being." If you are a beginning meditator, this perennial favorite is a good place to start."

what do you do during the day time? do you have a full time job or anything? I know that sitting around all day doing nothing made me want to smoke pot more frequently. Now that I work hard all week, when I do get time off I am just happy to sit around and watch t.v, read or visit with friends...although I do get cravings for a few beers now that I no longer smoke.

Perhaps you just think you were 'cripple by fear' and other such things before you smoked weed. Seems to cloud memory sometimes. I wonder if you stopped smoking weed, if the symptoms you were receiving came back.
If you wanted to, you could just wait to see if they come back or not. I can't say I've ever seen studies on such a topic before.

They say psychedelics cure (and in some cases cause) certain problems for people like that. Since weed is supposedly a mild psychedelic, I wonder if it could be used as a similar too.

I really have no idea though... I might just be really baked. :stoned:

That is what spurred this whole post...since I've been on my smoke break I've been suffering a lot of anxiety just like I used to.

I have been thinking about this for some time now.

I have a friend that was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder YEARS ago. He was told to stop smoking pot and start taking pills to better control his mood swings.

He was prescribed several different med's and combination of meds. Nothing helped. He would either have no emotions or raging emotions.

He began to think about how his life was before he was diagnosed w/bi-polar disorder. He had mood swings but they were mild in comparison to what the Rx pills were.

He decided to stop with all the pills and started smoking pot again. Didn't telll his Dr/therapist, just quit going to see him. Things slowly began to get better. His marriage improved and his mood swings were not an issue......as long as he got his pot daily.

I really don't see any difference between self-medicating with a plant and taking a pill....as long as his mood swings are under control

Yes, exactly.  I have have also been told I am bipolar, obsessive compulsive, anxiety disorder, borderline personality over the years.  I never could get a good balance going with the meds I was put on, they would make me either sleep constantly, or get over-jittery and anxious, or just terribly depressed.

I would like to use weed as a medicine like some people take their pills.

They're all mind altering.

But no pill was enjoyable for me to take...weed is enjoyable...and I think that's why now I'm worried that I am just making an excuse to take it?  I know it helps the moodiness and anxiety but it's hard to say with me.  I'm very good at manipulating myself.

Or maybe I'm just making a mountain out of a molehill...that's equally possible.  I bet most people don't agonize this badly about their weed consumption.  Ehh...sorry for being all dramatic about this. :tongue:

I'd go so far as to say I was lazy before smoking weed, and now I'm less lazy than what I used to be. I think physical activity is pretty great while stoned.

Yeah, I do like exercise while high. I also become more aware of my body, which sort of encourages me to work out more.

My friend is far from lazy. He has been married for 14 years, raised a good step-child and had the same job for 10+ years.

Saying someone is a "lazy pothead" is prejudice.

I agree...were you replying to a poster above me? (saw that your reply was to my name)

I don't usually have a problem with laziness when smoking. I just try to make sure that I have important stuff done first.
