whats going on?
    #424408 - 10/13/01 08:11 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

My friend has some pint jars colonizing and they are on day 20. They have a hole in the lid covered with aluminum foil upside down with no signs of contams. Only odd thing is colonizing seems to have slowed down almost permently. The edges of the mycelium are nice and white with fiberous growth however older growth has seemed to become less fiberous and seems to have darken up a little (not like a contam but like it is unhealthy for some reason). Also kind of looks like there is not as much mycelium as there once was. Does this mean co2 is killing them or have they used most of the nutrient already in the rest of the substrate? He plans to grow them PF style but he isnt even sure he will get to this step if things keep going this way. Does anyone know what could be happening?

what you describe sounds like a classic case of contamnation, kinda like damnation. if smell is not ghastly, i suggest birthing the cakes onto a bed of verm inside individual plastic jar lids, and spraying the cakes directly with a solution of 4 or 9 parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. this will not kill your mycelium, but may stunt your bacterial contam sufficiently that the mycelium can have a chance to take over. there is an older tek that involved branding, but it worked best on cakes not known to be contamned.

By any chance did you take the tape off and flip them? That will allow the CO2 to exit. They could be just starving for air.

All events stated by myself are only fictionous stories, any relations to true events are intirely coincidental.
