Is there a "best" light source?
    #4242759 - 06/01/05 02:38 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I have been using 4blue LED's for my fruiting chamber.. but I used a small blacklight before. I really don't understand how mushrooms respond to different wavelengths of light. Also, just how much is enough? 5watts 50watts? I know that more won't make them grow bigger.. but will more give them a stronger signal that it is time to fruit?

So main questions..
1)is one type of light really better?
2)how many watts should the light be?
3)would some blue LED's mixed with UV be even better somehow?

Thanks guys

~Quiescence~

In my opinion the best light source is from the sun. Indirect sunlight is free and abundant. Even light on cloudy days does the job. I don't mean to sound crass, but stop thinking about this so much. Put your containers or fruiting chambers in a well lit room for at least 12 hours a day and forget about them.

Even better. Put them in a room where you can crack some blinds or curtains, avoiding direct sunlight of course, and let the natural course of light do it's job. We only get around 12-14 hours of light per day, so why worry. Don't spend money on lighting when you have an abundant source free of charge.

Just my two cents.

also i wouldn't use blue lights because they may still filter out some beneficial blue wavelengths. use white light, it loses nothing.

dont touch the UV lights, they brak down DNA and cause mutants. Ever wonder why the sun gives cancer? Blue light in i think the 460nm range is what does it but most flouresnts support that and they dont put off heat, much, which is good.

Flourescent bulb is simply the best. Full spectrum, cheap, doesn't need much power.

Fish stores sell blue spectrum lights, they give off a kid of blue glow in the water, they're the Best.

i think that light source should be the least of your worries.
opinions vary, and i'm sure many will disagree with me, but the little bit of natural light that comes in under the closet door is all that mushrooms need.

I use a under cabinet light that has 5 white LED lights in it for a tub. It works just fine. I would have to agree light isn't a real big issue. Use what you have, natural is great if available. If in a closet use fluorescent, LED or whatever is easiest and you have available.

NOPE! Can't disagree with that. Hell i've grown cakes in complete darkness before with incredible results. All they needed was the 5 minutes of sunlight that was given to them to fan and mist a few times a day.

Id stay away from the UV. Ive had alot of trouble with that. I wanted to experiment with black light. Oddly enough, i would still get pins, then they would turn into mature mushrooms but they would always turn towards the ground with the UV. Ive been through quite a few different light sources. Ive found that 1 33 watt 2ft flourescent bulb is the best for me. I use it for light for 2 different terrariums and it does a beautiful job. I would still agree with everyone else though. Light shouldnt be that much of a worry.

Wow. So that's a lot of opinions. I am not 'worrying'.. just curious. I just like to fully understand what is going on .. and I had Zero knowledge of the phototropic aspect of mushrooms. So it sounds like the "blue spectrum aquarium light" wins. I have been using a CPU fan with 4 blue LED's attached to it .. and I had it lying around.. so it was pretty cheap

Also, the other reason I can't really use sunlight is that I will be leaving for several weeks this summer and all the kids are going to stay at a friends house. They will all be tucked away in a closet so the cleaning lady doesnt mess with them. So they have to be completely opaque and self contained.

Thanks for all the responses.

Some times people think too hard. try a night light. 99 cents from dollar store 4 hours of light works well.

4 hours? That seems a bit low... I've read 12/12 is best, even 16/8 when starting to pin.

I was going to go with compact fluro.  But since it's compact, it would be placed in the middle of my fruiting chamber.  I know they aren't like plants, but if there was one small source of light in the center... would all the shroom tilt into that direction, or making larger fruits in the center?  I wouldn't want to sacrifice yield just because its easier to use a compact fluro.

My chamber is a little over 2 feet long, so that means some parts will be right underneath the light, some will be up to a foot away, having the light come in from a 45 degree angle.  Any issues with this?  Or should I just get a long fluro and lay it on the top...
