Best looking contam?
    #4242625 - 06/01/05 02:04 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone have impressive contamination photos? I've recently discovered a red and yellow juicy aspergillus from an attempted isolation of lactarius. The contam photos can use some new shots.

Thanks,

this one isnt so impressive but i thought it was worth adding, some unusual red spot formed in the middle, but the myc seems to be eating it or something.

I like the look of some lipstick as far as contams go, but i'd rather not see any, obviously.

Check out this contam, I don't know what it is but it grows very fast on peat moss. If anyone knows please let me know.

...posted these a few years ago. I was cloning some wild Psilocybe cyanescens. This contaminant appeared on several plates:

(photo through Nikon zoom stereoscope)

Some said myxomycete; others bacterium. I never had it properly looked at. It's still lurking in my fridge somewhere...

Amazing... organized, but unicellular. Myxomycete gets my vote. I wouldn't want that in my fridge :frown: Supposedly, slime molds can move en masse to get food, avoid heat, etc. Creepy.

Hehe, it's not in my regular fridge of course. It's in a fridge devoted to long term culture storage, safely cocooned in parafilm.

Myxos are amazing. It's not just 'supposedly' that they can move en masse; I've seen it firsthand. Anyone with any experience culturing them for fun? I read that you can grow many species on plates inoculated with E. coli bacteria (a non-pathogenic strain, obviously), which they feed on. You first isolate them from soil and bark samples in a wet chamber. Would love to try this sometime.
