hydrated lime
    #4240981 - 05/31/05 04:53 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I finally got around to testing the ph level of the casings that i have always used. I have always used the following for casing 4 parts peat chunks removed 4 parts vermiculite and 1 part dolomitic limestone Fine particles. the ph level was a little low.
i understand that hydrated lime is a quick buffer. where might i find it? i've tried all the garden centres and all i can find is dolomitic lime. is it the same thing?

No, dolomitic and hydrated lime are not the same thing. Dolomitic will most certainly burn your mycelium and prevent growth. Hydrated lime is the best for a short term buffer. You could bypass the hydrated lime altogether and use calcium carbonate or ground up limestone. Both are gentle buffers.

Hi Yield brand is the best hydrated lime out there in my opinion. Try a specialty garden center, not Home Depot or other big box stores.

dolomite lime is a no go

try to find some calci-sand (100% calcium carbonate [=lime]). i think meijer has it, as does petco, for about 9 dollars for a 5 pound bag. a little much for 5 pounds, but for lime it will go a long way.

I just bought 'Hi Yield Agricultural Limestone" I thought this was the right stuff, it says

Calcium (Ca) total 21.60% 21.6% Water Soluble (Ca)
Magnesium (Mg) Total 13.03% 13.03% Water insoluble (Mg)
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) 53.94%
Magnesium Carbonate (MgCO3) 45.36%
Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (CaCO3) 109.03%

Now never mind that those percentages don't add up, is this the right stuff. I've read that someone claims that Stamets claims over 2% Mg is no good, but it says Insoluble (probably soluble to Mushies). I can't find pure Ca CO3.

Way too much magnesium there ShroomDr.
If you can't find good calcium carbonate, you can use hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide). Just be sure to get a soil pH probe.
