Help Choose A MicroScope And Camera
    #4241771 - 05/31/05 08:34 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

I just graduated and my grandparents offered to buy me a microscope and camera. Trying to keep the total cost around a thousand dollars. I want a microscope with good magnification for mycology and whatever else i get into. What is the standard for mycology. And basically a good quality microscope. The camera is where it gets tricky. I would like it to be digital and be able to take pics through my microscope and then be practical for everyday use kinda things. It would be cool if it could export video to my computer while plugged in. SO i could make movies of my myc growing. I really need help as i am kinda a newbie with microscopes. USed them in biology but dont know where to shop. Thanks all

PS
RR i know you helped me before but now i have a little different price range / needs so any more help is greatly appreciated.

I haven't priced too many of them, but i have checked out the general market...

here's a site that has a lot of info on scope and camera combinations http://microscopeworld.com/video/vidflex.htm

not sure their pricing is best, so shop around

www.cynmar.com

They have a great microscope/videocamera built in one with the software to take measurements Automatically via the computer for under a grand.

My only concern is that it is monocular, and that might drive you nuts. You can also find a good binocular microscope and camera sold seperately at that site for under a grand.

I use the M2 binocular with camera mount. It's an awesome scope, but will run a bit over a grand. 400x is really as much as you'll need. 100x is plenty to see clamp connections and identify contaminants. Power/magnification(above 400x) is not as important as the diameter of the lenses. Cheap microscopes have little bitty lenses and the optics suck. The field of view is also very small with small lenses. Get one with large lenses and you'll see much more and it will be clear.

does anyone know a digital camera that can act as a web cam when pluged into usb. That way i can export 2 or 3 days long videos to my computer to shorten into lapsed time

also it doesn't really explan the difference between plan, semi-plan and c-mount and eyepiece
