LONDON, Ky. -- A Kentucky judge has been offering some drug and alcohol offenders the option of attending worship services instead of going to jail or rehab -- a practice some say violates the separation of church and state.

District Judge Michael Caperton, 50, a devout Christian, said his goal is to "help people and their families."

"I don't think there's a church-state issue, because it's not mandatory and I say worship services instead of church," he said.

Alternative sentencing is popular across the country -- ordering vandals to repaint a graffiti-covered wall, for example. But legal experts said they didn't know of any other judges who give the option of attending church.

Caperton has offered the option about 50 times to repeat drug and alcohol offenders. It is unclear what effect the sentence has had.

David Friedman, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky, said the option raises "serious constitutional problems."

"The judge is saying that those willing to go to worship services can avoid jail in the same way that those who decline to go cannot," Friedman said. "That strays from government neutrality towards religion."

What do you think? What about an atheist, would they be descriminated against by this type of action?

Lets see????????????

choose either

A. go to church and have to listen to jesus propaganda.

or

B. go to jail instead where they would have plenty of separation of church and state and family and friends and freedom, etc.

What if they're Rastifarians?

Can they go smoke dope and complain about "Babylon" instead of going to jail?

So it has to be some kind of "worship service" eh?

They have to be worshiping something.

I wonder if this would work for pagans and satanists.

What about Buddhists, they don't "worship" anything per se do they?

I'd definitely go to church instead of jail.

Headphones = k3y.

Are you even put on drug testing if you go to the church service?

I think we would do some kind of open information thing with the school instead of the standard "prayer meeting". It would be more common for us I think to just admit them to the school and give them access than try to set up some special (and most likely convoluted...) thing.
MONASTIC (mono - as in "one" "uno") tradition doesn't directly imply any group activity, it implies personal growth in the spirit and fulness of life.

Yes, they pass around a tray with little cups that everyone has to fill up and put back in the tray.

It comes right after the crackers and grape juice.

I do think it is a bit detestable that those advertising as "Christian Churches" would be co-"in it" with the State, but some of them are so desperate to be seen as valid that they seek thier validity from the State - Like Hitler did. (No offence BabyHitler...)
