Using a HEPA like a flowhood?
    #4240065 - 05/31/05 03:15 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I was wondering if I turned my hepa filter upside down and suspended it over my work area, could I work under the stream of air that is discharged from the filter? Kinda like using it as a flow hood.

The flow would not be laminar & the vortex effect would draw a very high percentage of unfiltered air into flow.

In my humble opinion, it would be better to sanitize a small closed bathroom, run the hepa in it long enough to cycle the air through the hepa several times, then turn the hepa off, spray Oust or Lysol high & let it settle & work in CALM STILL AIR on a countertop - with a face mask & hair cover on. Just my 0.2 cents

I would agree with agar. There is a distinct difference between a linear laminar flow and normal air flow such as what you would get during hepa operation. HOWEVER, back when my buddy used to grow he was experimenting with a positive pressure hepa design, using a big ass HEPA and a rubbermaid tub. He cut out a hole big enough for his hepa to fit, laying the HEPA on its side. Then he cut out two arm size holes. Once the inside of the tubberware is sterilized then you crank the HEPA up, and there is so much pressure in the box that air is only going out. This means you don't need airtight gloves or anything like that, its simply enough to use sanitized bare hands. My friend tested it for contams using 6 cooked jars of popcorn and got 0 contams after a week, when his 2 control jars that were open to the air in his house had contamed. But just a HEPA probably won't work =(

Thank you all for the input. I think I am just going to try and build a flow hood. I guess it's just easier to do it right the first time!
Happy trails!!!!
