50/50+ tek
    #4239425 - 05/31/05 11:45 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I am making a casing mixture using the 50/50+ tek with peat, verm, and hydrated lime. I used the hydrated lime in about a 5% ratio to the others in the mixture. I have noticed it has a smell similar to pool chemicals (but not a chlorine smell) for lack of a better comparison. This is my first time working with this casing and I am wondering if this is normal or if I used too much hydrated lime and am going to burn my mycelium? Thanks to everyone for their help.

I have never personally used this method. From my understanding of it, you will always get that smell but the intensity of it i am unaware of. Your best bet is to wait and see if it colonizes. If so, then all is well.

I use the 50/50+ casing tek exclusively and the smell is normal. I don't know why it smells like that, but it will not harm your mycelium growth. Make sure you stick to the parameters of the mix though. Too much hydrated lime can burn the mycelium.

The correct ratio, using the full recipe, is about 3.1%. That's one cup of hydrated lime to every 15 1/2 cups of verm and peat, for a total of 31 cups. Don't forget the crushed oyster shells for the long term PH buffer. The hydrated lime will buffer the PH right away, but is not long lasting.

Thanks for the information. I have never used the hydrated lime and that why was I was nervous about the smell and potency of this product. I used it in about a 4.7% ratio so I hope I did not over do it. A box of colonized straw was cased with it a few minutes ago so I guess I will find out in the next few days if the mixture will work or not. Also, if it is not working is it possible to flip the straw substrate over and re-case the bottom with a new casing mix? Thanks for all the help.

I don't have the time to do the math on this right now. Check out this website for the conversions.

The recommended ratio of calcium carbonate per quart is 5.27% based on the recipe for the 50/50+ casing mix. I think it's about 36.43 teaspoons for each quart. That should be about right. Again, I don't have the time to figure the math based on your calculation of 1 teaspoon to a quart. Your ratio appears to be too low.

I hope this helps.

You could flip the substrate over, but it is not recommended. You do not want to disturb the substrate once it taken hold and created a good network of mycelium growth. I suppose you could flip it over if you handled it with kit gloves and then re-case.

I've never tried it so I don't have a definitive answer for you. Your mix of hydrated lime should be okay. You'll know if you're okay within 3-4 days. If the mycelium continues to grow through the casing layer, you'll be fine.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I am about to make my casing mix, and once again I have been reading different stuff.

Augustin, you say 3.1% of lime and 5.7% of caco3, correct? I may have misinterpreted that.

But according to Richard Hawks 50/50+ tek, it states:
"Adding 4% agricultural hydrated lime and 15% crushed oyster shell, by volume, to the over all 50/50 mix is a much better casing soil. "

So that is abit more... I'm a little left in the dark.

I will be making 2 12x12 casings 3/4 inch's deep. So that's 18 cubic inch's. (12 square inch's X 2 casings X 3/4 inch's deep) And I did the conversion and that's only 1.25 cups worth. Seems small if you ask me, but whatever. So I don't need the 30 cups worth that it says on the website, that's so much, I don't know why there isn't a smaller scale formula. All I have is like 2 cups of oyster shells so I'll make as much as I can with that, but these conflicting ratios are screwing me up.

I really don't know why they say 4% hydrated lime and 15% crushed oyster shell. Their recipe does not equate to that. I've done the math and it is the aforementioned percentages. Check it.

If you need to breakdown the measurements further, divide and concur. Start by dividing the formula in half, divide that formula in half, and so on. Read up on your conversions and you should be able to break this thing down to the ounce.

That's about all I can tell you for now. I didn't mean to confuse you. If the 50/50+ mix called for the 4% hydrated lime and the 15% crushed oyster shell, they should have included those percentages in their recipe.

Yea, I can handle the division to make a smaller amount.. I was just curious on the reason why they said 4% and 15% because I did the math and it came out to what you said.

Perhaps they meant after having 50/50 vermiculite to peat, add 4% and 15% to that final.  So in a sense making it a total of 119%... I don't care enough to do that math, but maybe that makes more sense.

Thanks again Augustin...  I think I'll make you proud with what I working on

Looking forward to it man. I wouldn't fret too much about the recipe for the 50/50+ mix. Make the recipe verbatim and divide it up to suit your needs.

I'll keep my eye out for your grow results.

I hear you on the PH levels differing from brand to brand, or even bag to bag for that matter. When this hobby becomes an exact science, I'll worry about it. Until then, the recipe works great without any further intervention.
