ID help needed.
    #4239299 - 05/31/05 10:44 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Yo, I need help on an ID for this mofo. I found it in the day and there was only one of them but it got me all happy none the less.

Its stem is about an inch long.

The cap is a little less than an inch wide.

Its got this hole in the top that goes down into the stem which is some weird shit I've never seen before right there.

It's kinda a brownish color but parts like the spores and the end of the stem look kinda blue/grey.

Here are some pics

So what do you think? Is it active and/or is it poison?
This is my first time hunting so I need all the help I can get. :mushroom2:

Doesn't really fit with any active species - at least not going by that photo. The possibility of it being poisonous remains. What kind of habitat was it found in? There are really a number of possibilities but it certainly doesn't look like anything that would be of edible value.

Hmmm, well I found it when I took a trip to Vincennes, Indiana. It was growing in some dark brown, almost black looking dry and somewhat loose soil. It was pretty hot and sunny too. Oh, someone told me that picking in the day makes them not work even if they were active. I haven't found anything that's said that on the net that I feel like trusting. Is that bit of info true?

"that bit of info." is not true. IF they are active species, it doesn't matter what time of day they're picked,yo.

Your picture is a bit too blury to ID, and the spores, well... Did you take a spore print? Or are you looking at the color of the gills.

By the way, it "resembles" an active species, but don't eat it. Besides, you only have one and if it were active, it wouldn't do much, so don't risk it, yo.

Go to the same spot early morning, after a rain prefferably, get some fresh ones and then re-post some pics here; And don't forget to take a spore print for us.

The gills are a golden brown and the spores are a grey/blue-ish color. It smells kinda sweet and mushroomy. I'm gonna try and get a spore print but it's kinda dried out so it may take a little while to get it wet and for the spores to drop and stuff.

Ok, I'll see if I can't get some better pics. I'm drying to get a spore print from the one I had now and I'll get more shrooms later if I figure out what they are.

This mushroom resembles a common edible but non-psilocybe containing mushrooms that grows on woodchips, sawdust, or tree roots. It grows commonly in florida and looks EXACTLY like yours.

DAMN! That sucks big donkey dick! Well, I'm gonna keep on hunting and keep in touch until I find a winner. I've found about 5 different kinds today and once I make a spore print, I'll put up some pics and discriptions of those. Oh well, at least I have something to eat.
Thanks for the help and wish me luck! :mushroomgrow: :goodluck:

you aren't gonna find 'a winner' going around picking whatever random mushrooms you see.

you have to make an effort to find the specific species you're after if you want to be successful.

I hope you weren't saying you're planning on eating those. the person who said they were edible doesn't seem to have a clue what they're talking about.

we can't ID dried mushrooms.

Nah, I wasn't gonna eat it. That'd be kinda gross anyway considering it was in my pocket for four days.

I'd personally love to know what kinda species I'm after man, but I don't know shit about fuck when it comes to that. I've checked the little thingy up on this site that lists shrooms that can be found in each state and well, it's blank for IN and I don't feel like takeing a long trip just to get shrooms. I'd ask around here if anyone knew of any kinda shrooms in Indiana but unfortunatly that's against the rules SO, what can you do, you feel me?

no, I don't feel you. you should try actually READING the page that list is on, among other things, before you start talking about how little you know and how we don't let people ask the questions you want to ask :smirk:.  everything you need/want to know is already here and easy to find if you try to look.

Hey man, no need to get testy. I wasn't complaining, just saying. I know damn straight that there's a lot more info than what was on that one page out there, I just thought it'd be a lot safer if I had some human interaction so I don't just leave it all up to myself to figure out at once. If your worrying about me junking up your message board with just random stuff I find, don't worry about it. I'm a little smarter than that. I'll only post if I find something that I think looks like something that I could trip off of.
Sorry dude. =\

how much is there to figure out, really?

once you know what species grow there you find out what habitat they like and when they grow (google or the FAQ), then go look in matching habitats at that time. if you find something that looks promising you take prints/pics and post a description. post all the ID requests you want, we don't mind, just don't expect to find actives picking random mushrooms that look like some you saw in a picture.

fair enough. I'll just hang around farms and that kinda thing and look for Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe semilanceata or whatever.
thanks.

haha, jesus man.

semis dont grow in indiana, cubes probably don't either.  as is evident by looking at the list you already mentioned.  a little reading would keep you from wasting a lot of time, but that's up to you...
