I remember listening to "The G. Gordon Liddy Show" once and Liddy got on the subject of marijuana prohibition. His justification for keeping it illegal is because "police have no reliable way of testing whether drivers are high or not".

I thought they had some new instant test for marijuana intoxication. I seem to vaguely recall hearing about this somewhere...

I feel very strongly that people should not drive while impaired.
Although, I don't think they should test people to see if they have cannabis in their system. People can smoke lots of weed, and have THC in their system all the time... but that doesn't mean they are impaired.
I think what they should do, is just the normal impairment tests... such testing to see if the person can walk in a straight line, check their balance, their reaction time, etc.

if you can't pass a field sobriety test, it doesn't matter what your on: weed, alcohol, sleep deprivation, etc. you shouldn't be behind the wheel. in my state the police can take you into custody for suspicion of being under the influence of an illegal substance, then have you submit to blood and/or urine tests. refusal to submit=automatic license suspension.

I guess I've never felt that pot impaired my driving to any sort of dangerous level. I know lots of people swear they can't drive stoned and they shouldn't. But one of my favorite activities is going for "smoke cruises". Driving stoned comes as a sort of second nature to me. I'm sure people will tell me I'm stupid for saying that but oh well.

Nah. I smoke on the way to work, but it is only like, 11 blocks. Bud is crucial for road trips, too. Makes me tired, sometimes, but I never drive bad, or worse that I already drive, according to other peeps, in the car.

depends upon how much and how you individually react to THC, some individuals shouldnt ever smoke pot and drive.

i live in one of the few areas in france that allow cops to test your saliva to see if you have THC in your system. the results are instant, although i'm not sure about the effectiveness.

I agree with that. I personally believe that a little bit of weed does not impare one's driving skills in any significant way compared to alcohol. How would you guys go about explaining that to someone like Liddy who has never touched the stuff and who thinks driving stoned is as bad as driving drunk?

I think all forms of cannabis should be legal before alchole should. Alchole will pickle your liver and kill you way faster than pot would. I still dont think "most" people should not be smoking pot while they drive. It should be legal for responsible adults 18 and older. Thats just my opinion though.

I think they definately need a way to test for it on the spot.
I once got arrested on probable cause because the officer thought I 'looked' like I was on marijuana. It took a couple months and a thousand dollars to get a copy of my clean Tox report from the police who were sitting on it so they would drop the case. Bastards.
When I get the time I think I'll have the ACLU pay them a visit.
I think they need a reliable way of testing for marijuana on the spot before arresting you, or else they shouldn't be able to arrest you without any possesion or physical evidenc of wrongdoing.

i agree... but the difficult part about all this is the following: there are ways to test for thc through sweat or saliva instantly... but these tests do not differ from the delta-9-THC (the one that makes you high) and the other THC (the one that is left in your body after the delta-9-THC has been assimilated)... so even if the test turns out positive it does not mean that you are high at the time...

Exactly, so should marijuana stay illegal until the police have a reliable method of testing your sobriety?
