condensation, turned jars upside down, is this OK?
    #4236866 - 05/30/05 04:03 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

i'm on my first grow attempt right now using the pf tek with brf and vermiculite, my jars have been colonizing for 8 days now and 2 of the jars are almost completely colonized. Those two jars have lots of condensation in them and i was told to turn them upside down so the water doesn't pool up at the bottom of the jars, the cakes have shrunk a little so when they were turned upside down they are no longer touching the bottom of the jar (now the top of the jar since they are upside down). I don't think this will hurt them i any way but will i have any problems with this, Will the mycelium grow fine without the cake being pressed up against the jar? And also will i run into any problems with the water droplets collecting on the inside of the jars? Any responses are much appreciated!

Condensations is normal. Relax...don't worry. If you have so much water you can actually see it pooling, then it might be a problem, but otherwise regular condensation is normal. One of the main reasons folks turn the jars upside down is a stalled/pathetically slowed colonization due to CO2 and sometimes less than ample moisture....but after 8 days if they are almost fully colonized with no contams you are doing well. Once they are fully engulfed on the outside of the cakes, give them a couple of three extra days in the colonization chamber to completely colonize the interior parts. If one of the more experienced growers wants to add or modify anything the young grasshopper has said, please do so....I welcome it. Want to make sure dingle gets his berries..:)

hahahaha, laughing my ass off, that's so bad ass!

So will i run into any problems with the cakes not touching the sides of the jars? And also should i turn the back over or just leave them or does it even matter? Thanks for the reply

If you have enough moisture in there and you can see some of the condensation on the outside of the jars you should be okay, but if they have SHRUNK from the side of the jars from their original position due to lack of moisture...then it might be an issue. There are remedies for that as well however.

the cakes have shrunk in size but they still touch the sides of the jars. But when i flipped it upside down it now rests on the slipped from the bottom of the jar and is no longer in contact with it? Is this a problem if it isn't in contact with the sides of the jars? should i flip it right side up so it is in contact with the jar?

in my previous post i meant to say "it slipped from the bottom of the jar and rests on the lid" The mycelium growing of the top of the cake (used to be the bottom but it's flipped now) isn't growing flat, it's kinda puffy and cottony, allmost looks like cobweb mold, hope it's not, pretty sure it's not. I think i'll flip it back the original way to try to get the mycelium to grow flat againt the cake like the rest of it. I don't think i'll have any problems with this but if i will please tell me.

Thats what its going to start doing before it fruits when its out of the jar, you may get pins inside the jar if you wait some more.

how much more until they are fully colonized dingle?
i wouldn't have mislead you in anyway by telling you to flip those jars man. apparently you had some pooling of water in the bottoms or you would not have flipped them. if they are not fully colonized as of yet just leave them be. they will be fine.
peace
