What lead you to the decision to put perlite and water under a casing. I have never read anything on this site that would lead me to try this.

Good Luck.

Perlite is used in fruiting chambers like that to increase humidity in the environment of the chamber, but not actually under the casing. This is a job best left to VERMICULITE.

I would remove them and replace that perlite with vermiculite and proceed like normal from here.

Read the casing TEK's. Perlite doesn't really absorb moisture as much as wick it out.

Do what you want. Maybe everyone else on here has been wrong for all these years. There is , from what I understand, no substitute for vermiculite. You hear of anyone using it in PF cakes?

It's obvious you seem intent on doing this. The reason I know it's not good is I'm sitting on 10 10quart bags of perlite. I bought out a local gardening center of verm, and perlite a few months back. Almost out of verm. so I asked all the experienced cultivators if I could do what you are doing and was definitely told NO. The peeps you hear about using perlite in cakes may just be experimenting. Do what you want.

Later.
Hippie Chick

im with hippy chick.. i dont think that perlite on the bottom of your casing is a good idea.. from what i understand the bottom layer is kind of a spung for when or if u over moisten the exces is sucked up in the bottom layer. i would stick with using vermiculite or put some of your casing layer on bottom then spawn them more casing. but thats just me..

i use perlite as the bottom layer of my casings. seems to be working fine for me.

yeah the fruits are small but thats just a single half pint so the super thin substrate layer can be given credit for the skinny mushers.

I have seen and read both sides of this, and some have claimed the perlite works ok under the casing, but typically perlite is recommended under cakes because of it's humidification properties. More often and common experienced folks use the verm casing, or peat and verm...but each to their own...so I guess you could say I too am with Hippy Chick..she is da woman. But hell...give it a shot and patience may just net you the results you want...the great thing about this hobby is experimentation rules supreme.
