First Findings Panaeolus papilionaceus??
    #4236518 - 05/30/05 02:05 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I found these growing in the horse pasture behind my house. I think they are Panaeolus papilionaceus can someone help me identify. Here are the pictures.  The spore print is black.  The stem is hollow. White veil fragments (look like small spikes) form at edge of cap but shrink/fall off when picked and drying.

This is one outdoors.. Bit Blurry but you get the jist.

These are all picked and set out on a towel so i could take pictures.

So any of you have any thoughts?  Im gonna eat these if they are Panaeolus papilionaceus some say they are actives.  Anybody know anything about that ?  :crazy2:

Seems to fit with Panaeolus papilionaceus to me.
I wouldn't recommend eating them. They are listed as inactive. Might cause stomach upset.

I have tried these before. i smeared one against a white counter and it left a blue streak. They might be active, but i surely didnt eat enough if they were (~40 whole fresh shrooms).
The ones in the top 2 pics (the grass pics) are definently Pan. papillios., the 2 pics at the bottom are definently not (except the one shroom with the cracked cap that also in the middle pics). The shrooms in the middle pcs are questionable, too old. Id toss any of them that are cracked like that from age.

Looks like you may have two different species there, the ones in the top pic appear to be pan camp/pan pap, and the ones in your last pictures are slightly resembling panaeolus solidipes. Wait for a more expert opinion on this, but none of them are actives.

If they are infact pan camps/pan paps, the only thing in them that would cause you any sort of high at all would be seratonin, and thats a chemical thats already in your brain, and that you already experience every day.

You wont get high off of any of those mushrooms.

It looks like you have a mixed collection of in-active Panaeolus mushrooms.

What I'm going on is PMOTW - Stamets mentions eating "nearly thirty specimens", not getting the effect and considers them inactive.
