Should I use Perlite?
    #4235990 - 05/30/05 08:22 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hi, Im busy planning my first grow and have a question on humidification for my fruiting chamber. First of all, a little background on how im going to do my grow:

Im going to be using the PF-Tek to grow the mycelium, im then going to crumble the colonised substrate over pasturised H/Poo (by following Roadkills Tek), and finaly, before i put the cases into the fruiting chamber im going to add a 60/40 Verm/Coir casing layer.

Now, what im trying to decide on is what to use for my humidification in my fruiting chamber. Ive heard a lot of good stuff about Perlite, and im leaning towards that, although ive noticed a lot of people just use Expanded Clay Pellets. Are these two things one and the same, or are they very different, and which would you recommend for my situation.

Thanks,
Akasha

they work the same way. geolite is just cleaner and easier to work with. downside is its harder to find and more expensive than perlite.

Yes, what lowdominion said. Cleaning up perlite after you are done sucks. Plus I'm not sure if one could use it in combination with airstones and an airpump.

Oh ok cool. Well, i can get both easily and both are at reasonable prices, so i guess it just comes down to the fact that Hydroton (thats what Expanded Clay Pellets are in Australia) is cleaner and easier to work with. I think ill go with the Hydroton. Thanks guys.

The clay pellets are like lava rock, I don't remember the name, and yes, it's just the same as perlite, except in charactaristics (eg, one might be easier for you to clean or suit your needs, or the only thing you can get)
Point being, they serve the same function.
For casings, you will only need one or the other, and no need for a bubbler to raise rH. The stone alone will provide enough moisture.
I do use my bubbler wands to sit ontop of the rock to help with air circulation.

Oh ok cool, thats good to hear about not needing an air pump for casings, cos this is a major stealth op and i cant have ANY noise. Ill just deal with fanning 3 times an hr (im starting this project after my Uni exams, while im on my 1 month holiday , so ill have plenty of time for airing these things out).

For casings you can do this if you want and not mess around with perlite or hydroton:

Just air being pumped into a cup with water making bubbles.
