BRF Jar questions--dry climate growing
    #4234534 - 05/29/05 08:37 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I have some questions especially for those who have grown cubes in dry climates:

1. When I PC'ed my 1/2 pint BRF jars, I placed foil over the lids to keep extra water out. After they were done I left the foil on to preserve moisture and protect against contams. RH is normally about 45% or less here, but by placing an open container of distilled water in the incubator I am able to raise RH to a bit above 50%. Should I leave the foil on to preserve moisture in the jars or take it off to permit better air exchange?

2. What is the normal time frame of colonization between the slowest and fastest jars inoculated at the same time? I have one jar fully colonized now, and there are a couple about half colonized. Others are further along. When should I expect the slowest jars to catch up with the fastest?

as far as i know RH should be at LEAST 80% and that's only for casings. Cakes should be 94-100%.

I'm a noobie though so dont take this info to heart =)

your cakes should be good to colonize with or with out the tin foil. fruiting a totaly different scenerio. and with my experince it takes jars about an average of 2-4 weeks to colonize but it varies so much its kinda hard to answer.

Thanks for the information. I guess I'll leave the foil on for now and give the slower jars another week to catch up. There does seem to be growth in all of them and no contamination apparent.
