Cracking down on crooks.
    #4234055 - 05/29/05 07:23 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

It's already happened way too much in Marketplace. And it's bound to. Unfortunately this community attracts alot of bad, more good, but still alot of bad people.

One way to fix this would to have trusted members, that live scattered all over the place act as 'middle-men' (i forget the term) in trades. Waiting until both parties packages are received, then forward them on. They could be like mods, but different. That would definitely help.

A compiled list, readily available of known thieves could alert "would-be scamee's"

Another way would be to have someone assigned to matching 'known-scammer-IPs' with new members. Ensuring there not coming back to do it again.

Any feedback, or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I agree with the IP matching idea, but I think the middle man idea is bad. A former mod and respected users alike have ripped off people here, so it would be best to keep our current system without adding another person for your items to go through. Scammers...fuck em.

You make a good point. A middleman could help but the middle man could also fuck you and take both peices of the trade for him/her self.

The IP matching idea is good on the surface, but it will end up being as bad as open proxy "scanners" that simply use a database of scanned IPs... While you may keep the same IP for a while, unless you are explicitly given a static IP, your ISP can, may, and likely will juggle IPs around every so often.

Basically, new members WILL be accused of being crooks and have ABSOLUTELY no idea what the fuck you're talking about - but why should you believe them, 'cause that's EXACTLY what a scammer would say...

So yeah, please don't do that.

Ahh a topic I've got some experience with.

Its a tough thing, one of the main reasons why we created a rating system to help curb this issue. However there are things we do to monitor multiple accounts and we investigate any claim of ripping off by users.

However there is only so much we can do, as there is no sure fire way to stop it. I'll tell you in some cases that have been reported to me, people have traded with users with less than 50 posts and no trade ratings.. Now of course eventually someone has to take a chance with anyone without a rating, but still

The big thing is to teach common sense, if you are trading an item and have a great deal of posts and trade ratings, tell the new user with few posts and no ratings to send and you will then send upon receipt..

There are things people can do to protect themselves, but I do understand this will occur as long as we allow this trading forum on our site.

A middle man would be nice, but who would want that job and what if that person goes sour?

What happens if a user has good trade ratings, but they're fake?

We've found this with a scammer recently, he created two users and rated himself with the other, an of course we got him thankfully on the puppet tracker.

Like I said, there is no full proof way to protect users on our end. Its up to each person to do their best common sense and contact us if they have concerns.
