How should a friend case?
    #4233390 - 05/29/05 02:55 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

My friend has 12 1/2 pint jars (7 Argentina, 5 S.AFrican) that will be ready to be cased in about a week or so.

What is a good method for casing that you would recommend that will get some nice flushes? What materials? Is peat/verm 50/50 good with a bit of crushed oyster shell good? If so, what amounts exactly?

She wants to get the best possible results, but is a noob to casing so needs something balanced between great results and ease. Also, something that can be fruited in a normal 10 gallon aquarium.

She thought about coir, but can't find it locally in Phoenix, Arizona. She doesn't want to mail order anything.

I personally really enjoy the ease and simplicity of the 50/50+ tek. I do think that it's really about personal preference though.

50/50+ is an excellent choice for a casing layer. You may have to add something besides oyster shell to adjust the ph. Oyster shell is a long term ph stabilizer. The ph of the peat may be a little off at the beginning. Check that 50/50+ TEK again.

I use the 50/50+ tek exclusively and have found that the Hi Yield brand hydrated lime works the best. I also use crushed oyster shells for the long term buffer.

HippieChick, I'm not sure what you mean by check the tek again. If you read the very last portion of the tek, it lays it out pretty well. I don't even bother with the first mix.

I meant to check it again to see what it recommends for immediate buffering as I wasn't sure. I myself use hydrated lime also.

You got it sister. Hydrated lime works very well and man is it cheap.

So calcium carbonate wouldn't work just as good as hydrated lime? I don't want to burn the mycelium.

I believe it will. That's why I didn't mention hydrated lime, too much can be harmful.
