'Nodes' In Myclelium w/ *Pictures*
    #422908 - 10/12/01 05:47 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I have just checked my incubation chamber to keep up to date with the progress of my mycelia and I've noticed an anomaly in one of my jars? mycelium.

The jar in question contains the mycelium of the Ecuadorian strain of Psilocybe Cubensis. The jars history is that it was one of the quickest of this batch to germinate (at four days from inoculation) and had rhizomorphic growth after nine. It is currently at day fourteen. It has been kept in an incubation chamber that registers eighty one to eighty two degrees Fahrenheit for the most part and has been exposed to light only for short periods of time during examination.

The irregularities (three in fact) are node-like and darker than the main body of the mycelium. They are about one to one point five millimeters in diameter and are surrounded by tiny rhizomorphs, spreading out from the node in a radial manner, much like a bullet hole in glass or, as they appear to be slightly three dimensional, maybe an aerial image of a volcano would be a better description, with the node being the crater (although not concave) and the rhizomorphs being part of the structure of the cone. The surrounding rhizomorphs extend about four millimeters from the nodes.

I don?t wish to bias your opinion with my own judgment, so I am leaving it up to you to decide what you feel these nodes may be.

i might be reading yopur description wrong, but are you sure these just aren't the very beginnings of pins?... a mycellial knot?..

I was hoping for some sort of identification by people who have seen this before. This is my first run, and as such have not seen the lifecycle right through before.

Does this sound like a 'knot' to anyone else? If so, at what stage should I birth the cake and what effect will letting the first fews pins develop 'in vitro' cause on the health/longevity of my cake.

However, please do not assume this is a 'knot', as I'm not doing so, unless of course you're sure that's what I have described.

I shall try to obtain a picture of my cake, but in the meantime any postings of pictures of mycelial 'knots' would be extremely welcome in this thread.

Here are two pictures of the nodes.

I apologise in advance for the quality of these images, but this is the best I will be able to do with the equipment to hand.

Please let me know what you think these might be.

Thanks.

Looks like spores that are germinating later than the bunch.

looks more like pins/knots than contam to me, especially seeing that the cake is pretty well colonized in that area and that myc is spreading from them. i wouldnt worry just yet. if they get bigger and spread then you lose 1 jar.

I did use a pressure cooker on full pressure for over half an hour and as the substrate is Rye flour and vermiculite that should be fine.

I'll keep this thread updated with the jars progress next week, or earlier if it goes drastically wrong.

Thanks for your opinions.
