Incubator question
    #4228254 - 05/27/05 11:35 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

alright so im useing this incubator tek http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

even when i put weights on the upper tub, it doesnt sink, it says the tub should rest on the spacers with just the jars filling the top tub. so that meens the damn top thing shouldnt float. is that just a mistake by the author or should this thing really sink?

Mine floats. IT doesn't really make a difference in my opinion.

It shouldn't be floating, any chance you can string some long zip ties between the two somewhere? If so, zip ties work great, you can crank them down and seat the top tub as far as you want without fussing around with weights.

dont know if that'll work, i cant even push it down to sink, the bottom one starts to bend, its a rubber maid thing and not hard plastic, i gotta guess why it isnt sinking, but its hard to explain. so here for those who might understand,
its got like a dip in the bottom of the tub, like on the bottom, the edges of it come out more then the middle, like a water raft, so my guess is water is pushing it up like that.

If it's really bothering you, check into using some zip ties to hold it down.

Ok well, the reason I say it's important to have the top tub submerged is because it will give you a rising wall of water that heats more evenly than say, just the floor being heated up from the aquarium heater (floating). Several inches of warm water rising up around the jars = uniform heating = better colonization overall.

it is better that it doesn't float. I just don't mind that it does float. Hence my opinion.

i like mine floating because i can tell when i need to refill!!

you are supposed to have it sink so the water covers the sides too for more even heating.  i have a water pump mixing up the hot patches in the water and a fan inside to keep that temperature gradient off the jars...  no need to worry about side heating there   i think the pump and fan give me a more homogeneous temperature than just having side heating

Hmm, well mine is set up just like yours with the submersible pump, only I went to Home Depot and got two 12"x12" x1" tall concrete patio stones and sprayed it down with bleach.  When it is fairly loaded with jars, I use only one stone. When it is rather empty I use two stones.  These cheap (2$) stones are just the right weight for sinking my tub just till it touches the jars on the bottom tub.

May be overkill, but I have zero fluctuation of temps in between observations and the heat is covered all around the sides.

If you are trying to sink your tub, I suggest using the stones.

Zip ties. If it bends, Then let out some water.

Never understood the weights. You'd need so much it's redicilous.

Don't be silly.  Just fill it with quart jars of colonizing substrate/spawn.  That will weight it down.

how about getting two different size containers that both use the same lid! Put the smaller in the larger and no need for ties!
