When toliet paper was introduced in the early 1900s or the late 1800s (I can't remember) it was generally looked down upon and considered a fad since most people had magazines and newspapers in their outhouses and who the hell would want to spend money on toliet paper when they have these items already in there.

Most of the world still doesn't use toilet paper...
In some (asian) countries they leave a bucket of water next to the 'toilet' (hole in the ground with walls around it) and you just splash water on your ass from the bucket.

From what I remember during some Colonial-times museum, people back in the day often used the cob of corn stalks. In other words, corn-on-the-cob, without the corn... on the cob, that is.
I suspect the Latinos may have had the advantage of making tortillas for that purpose...

Sorry, but this is another facet of Americanization. Ever heard of a bidet? Toilet paper is so barbaric, water is the way to go.
But this disgusting question (by american standards) begs many more questions, like, what did women use before the tampon was invented?
