Why do we have to realize that we're being? Doesn't that just consume extra energy without giving us any advantage? Whether or not we stop to think about the fact that we exist, we'll continue to exist the same, so why bother I ask? It doesn't seem to give us anymore scientific knowledge like our realization of existing in a galaxy does, it doesn't give us any survival advantage like the realization of fire does, so why does the realization of being matter at all?

I don't feel that I can answer for anyone but myself... But it matters to me becaue when I do not realize that I am a being here on Earth, I do things, and get caught up in things that I don't care for when I am aware of myself. And I prefer myself, and feel better about myself when I am aware.
I agree that it probably doesn't give "us" as a species much advantage. But as an individual, I feel benefited by the realization.

Realization of being could potentially solidify weak connections with an environment.
The most pertinent example of this I can think of is the difference between Eastern and Western community values. In the West relationships are typically characterized as an active process where the individual's own life is the most valued commodity. I'll call this person Dewey, the "doing" human. Dewey's Eastern counterpart, Bob, on the other hand has a very strong sense of community that supersedes his sense of individuality. He is "being" part of a greater hole.
I feel this sense of community values is directly related to a sense of being. One of the first things many psychonauts discover in their journeys is an increased appreciation for the health of the community and a re-prioritization of selfish pursuits. By actively recognizing that you're part of something greater than yourself it becomes easier to devote yourself to that greater entity.
While Dewey would be struggling with his attempts to advance himself by his own power Bob would be advancing himself as a result of advancing his community. While a bit of a leap this leads me to believe that the sense of self is deeply related to the sense of community and that one may not necessarily exist without the other.

that's interesting-
that's a broad definition of knowing oneself- the concept we use to understand our relationships
it's kind of a positive conception of knowledge- knowledge constitutes the reality of something
as opposed to the negative conception- knowledge disturbs its object
