Very Nice New Recipe for Substrate
    #4223655 - 05/26/05 05:41 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, Here is a very airy and nutritious Grain to grain or agar, tissue culture substrate recipe that works very well. It?s easy to make and has yet to be sticky. It is a very nice substrate to use to continue your grain to grain transfers because it separates so nicely and colonizes rapidly. It has not been tested with a spore print or syringe yet. That would be something for someone to experiment with
The main ingredient is Bulgur Wheat.

You can find it at health food and grocery stores.
2 cups bulgur wheat
2 ? cups water
2 cups Vermiculite
1 cup Perlite
Large bowl
Mixing Spoon
Measuring cup
1. Measure out 2 cups of Bulgur Wheat and put in bowl
2. Measure out 2 ? cups water and pour into bowl over BW (bulgur wheat)

3. Let the mixture sit for 2 hours covered. It will double in size and absorb all the water.

4. Measure out 2 cups vermiculite and mix into BW mixture in bowl
5. Measure 1 cup Perlite and pour in bowl mixing it too.

6. Load the mixture into jars and PC them for 1 hour

You know the rest

* Note* The perlite isn?t necessary to keep it from sticking, it stays airy by itself, the perlite is used to create spaces for large pure mycelia tissue to develop in.

Thank you very much.

So the approximate volume of the wheat after it has absorbed all the water would be about 4 cups? The reason I asked is because I have some pre-cooked wheat grain that comes in cans that I would like to adapt to this recipe as soon as my in-laws are out of the house. This is the stuff I'm referring to.

Yes, it comes out to about 4 cups. Try your canned wheat and see, just make sure it doesn't have any preserves in it, that may hinder growth.

oysterguy63 Wow,That would add another dimension to the strength LOL. Test it and see what happens. That's whats fun with experimentation. bluhoney
