Need help with my casing
    #4223990 - 05/26/05 09:18 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hi gang, I'm having a problem. My Hawaiian casing seems to be in stasis. I cased the Hawaiians on the 9th and birthed them on the 12th. On the 21st, I cold-shocked them because colonization was happening at an extremely slow pace, (if not stopped altogether). On the 23rd, I thought that the casing layer might have been made a little too deep, so I gently scraped off a good deal of the uncolonized casing layer--and indeed, it did appear to be a little too deep. Now it's the 26th, and I'll be damned if I'm seeing any colonization at all.

This casing was done in the same way that all my other successful casings have been done, except for these variables:
1) The mycelium was made a little deeper than my previous casings. In this instance, it was about 2 1/8".
2) The casing layer was made slightly deeper than normal. (I can't give you a figure on that.)
3) I birthed the casing a little bit sooner this time.
4) It's been very warm over here in recent days. Right now, the temp around the terrarium is roughly 82 degrees F, and a little warmer inside. That drops down about 10 degrees at night.

Please help me! I'm going crazy without my brain medecine.

I was thinking of maybe plopping the casing out of its container and depositing it upside-down on a plate or something. But I'd like to know what the problem is first before I do that. Thank you

straight cased pf cakes or what?
cased on 9th and birthed on 12th, shouldn't have birthed until you seen that myc just under the surface of the casing.
what do you mean the myc was too deep?
casing a little deeper?
82 should be fine to finish up the colonization.
wow man,wtf.

Cased PF cakes.
Incubated until I saw a few spots of mycelium coming through. (I've done this before)
I said the casing layer (top non-nutritive layer) was a little too deep--by which I mean the mycelium had not permeated most of the casing layer.

It's because you used cakes. When making a casing it's better to use grain. If you're making a casing anyway it yields heaps more with grain than with cakes because there is more food for the fungi.

I've always used cakes before, and it's always worked.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

I think you may have needed to incubate longer after you cased...3 days isnt very long

land crab: i'm still not that good at casing(pinset)but i do know that in the future your casing should be 1/2 inch for every 1 inch of myc. up to 2 inches total of casing matrl.  If you use a 1/2 inch layer you shouldnt have to incubate at all(to get fruit).
and like lengthly fellow(so he says lol), i also play with poo

closet your numbers are a little off. your casing layer should be about 1/4 the depth of your substrate. 4 inches substrate = 1 in casing layer 2 inches would be way overkill for 4 inches of sub
