lids off during incubation?mycelium growth and air?
    #4223394 - 05/26/05 06:27 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

my first pf jars are incubating right now. they have nice patches of mycelium growing around the injection sites. I've heard some talk about mycelium needing air to grow or making it grow faster. Should i take the tape off of the holes where i injected? Should i take the whole lid off of my jars? or should i leave them as they are, with the lids on tight with tape over the holes in the lids for spore injection? they seem to be doing fine now. this is my first grow by the way

I would take the tape off ONLY if you have a verm barrier. Whatever you do, do not take the entire lid off or it will contam.

If you have that top layer of verm, you are fine so take that tape off!! And next time use Tyvek

tyvek is good, but if u dont have a dry verm barrier use band aids over the holes instead of tape, this will let them breath

If you dont' have a dry layer of verm, is it still okay to take the tape off the holes as long as there is tyvek over the holes?

how could you have tyvek over the holes? all the tyvek i have seen is sandwiched between the lid and the band.. you put a hole through the tyvek when you inoculate

Yeah what Mych said. Basically you just don't want the uncolonized substrate directly exposed to the outside world. From bottom to top it should look like thiis: substrate, dry verm layer, lid with punched holes where you inoculated. You could put tyvek over this but that does no good. The tyvek tek would be: substrate, dry verm layer, tyvek with the holes you created when you stuck the needle in. Don't tape the holes either. Unecessary.

I'm talking about from bottom to top: substrate, lid with holes, tyvek over lid and band screwed down over tyvek. You can see them here

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post4222264

Half don't have the dry verm layer, the other half don't.

i dont mean to jack the thread here but if using tyvek would pollyfill be unnecessary (or vise versa)? or could polyfill be used to cover the holes while in the p.c. and to keep contams out while innoculating? so
substrate, lid with pollyfill, tyvek, lid ring. (no verm since i use wbs)

i do have a dry layer of vermiculite and i don't have tyvek. Where do you get tyvek from? What do you recomend, just take the tape off of the holes?

^^^Don't tape the holes either. Unecessary.
true.
and don't remove the tin foil.
keep your dirty paws off the jars.
over handleing your jars is the #! cause of contamination .

myndreach: the ones with the dry verm layer, just tighten the bands over the tyvek onto the jar, don't use lids. For the ones without the dry verm layer, I would redo them, unless you inoculated already of course. In that case, I would say, lids and tyvek but that still leaves the substrate directly exposed to the outside world after you poke holes in it with the syringe.

waixinggren: as far as I know, you don't have to use polyfill along with the tyvek, it's an either/or situation, but with grains you need the lid as well, see how Magash put his lids together here:

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/26177

dingleberry: you can get all the tyvek you want from the post office, their Express Mail envelopes. You can use a CD to trace 12 discs from one envelope. Grab about 50 from the post office and you are set for life. They are free of course and you can even order them by the 100s from the USPS website
