storing in a DARK shelf @ roomtemp will definitely keep them viable for about half a year. storing them in the fridge will definitely keep them viable for a year if not longer. freezing them may partially cause spores to "blow up" and render them unuseable.
so your best bet would either be the fridge for long term, of a normal closet for not so long term peace ohm

RT. seal out the air if possible.
Spores MAY remain viable for DECADES that way.

Storage method... in an baggie, in an envelope, in a drawer. Rehydration...... one week in a syringe before use. Propogation...... rye jars and agar. Viability........ Perfect on both. Age of Print..... 22 years old.

gotta admit that that's a rare thing to happen though like to have it perfectly viable after such a long time. peace ohm

Yeah, 22yrs is pretty old and rare. Not too many 20yr old prints out there. But I can say I have had many prints stored in a drawer that were viable after 5 or more years, and syringes a year or more old stored at room temps that were just fine. My most surpising one was a LC syringe, 2 years old of Malabar, stored at room temp... worked perfect!
I think most people underestimate the durability of spores. Think of it... Spores from mushrooms and ferns have been found in aincient tombs that are thousands of years old... and still viable.
Enjoy

Heheheh... I appreciate your quest for proven facts but I am not about to debate it's accuracy or validity since it is not important to the discussion at hand. If your really interested... do a seach on "The mummy's curse" etc...
I offered a personal experience on viability of spores, syringes and LC.
Weather you, or anyone else cares to believe it is up to you... it works for me

Shdwstr, I think Ohm is simply asking for a reference to spores found in the tomb being "viable". You mentioned they were viable, and I too am interested as to how this conclusion was drawn?
The Mummy's Curse is about Howard Carter opening the tomb of King tut, yet I've never seen a reference to anything about mushroom spores in this event. Please elaborate.

I keep my prints in the fridge in their baggies/envelopes. The will get their own opaque box in there, and I will alphabetize them, when I remember to get one. I don't think light makes a difference, but, what the heck.
I have been practicing Agar's rigid laminate print making tek. $20 for a box of 100 ID card sized laminate sheaths.
They work fine as long as your mushroom caps don't get too big.
My Food Saver sealer works fine to seal them. That is an extra Orrisa India I have lying around now.

Your absolutely right. There was not direct reference to "Mushroom spores" to this example. But, a loosely related link may help to connect the dots. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/05/0510_050506_tvcurse.html I have read articles about fern and mushroon(fungus) spores found in tombs that have been grown. Unfortunately my late wife was the one with the photographic memory, or I would provide a link.
Only thing I can tell you is the article I read on the subject was in a scientific journal. Some things of interest, I do remember... Sorry, best I can do

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I definitely agree with you saying that people underestimate the longevity of spores. Mushrooms have survived every period/climate this earth has to offer, not to mention droughts, etc. It's simply amazing how tough they are.
