So it's alright to force someone to pay taxes which go to the military even if military spending goes against that persons philosophical views but the same isnt true for stem cell research.

If this research goes against someone's philosophical views, they should not have to pay for something they adamantly disagree with.

Just because the majority supports defense funding doesn't mean I should have to as well.

When you get elected you can contribute to the decision making process by any other method than 1. voting with enough other voters for some one else; and/or 2. attempting to convince other voters; or 3. leaving. You will not be imposing your will if it is not the will of the voters. You are, after all, an insignificant gnat, as are almost all of us.

It would be interesting to see what other countries are spending on stem cell research.

http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110006738

According to today's Wall Street Journal, our Federal Government spends $566 million on Stem Cell research. The State of California alone has voted to spend $3 billion over the next ten years. New Jersey is building a $380 million stem cell research facility. Federal and State spending on stem cell research is increasing every year.

Private foundations and Universities are also funding stem cell research. Harvard has raised $30 million in funding and that is just the begining. The Starr Foundation just gave $50 million to three different research facilities in New York City.

I have yet to see a comprehensive listing of all funding from the Federal and State governments. I have yet to see a comprehensive listing of funding from all Universities and not for profit foundations.

And none of those figures includes contributions from the private sector. The Journal reports that 70 companies are doing stem cell research and that the market for their products will generate $3.6 billion in revenues by 2015. I would expect more companies to join the field as time goes by, and for more funds to flow into the research.

I would bet that the United States has spent more money on Stem Cell research than the rest of the entire world COMBINED. I bet we spend more every year than the rest of the entire world COMBINED.

What a crisis!

EU won't up stem cell funding

Quote:

"Funding will not be specifically allocated for stem cell research," Mochan told The Scientist. Stem cell research [in FP7] will again be a small part of total research." According to a memo issued by the commission's office, under FP6, the commission is currently funding 25 stem cell?related projects, two of which involve human embryonic stem cell research. Funding for the two projects amounts to around ?500,000 (USD $651,700)

That $651,700 figure is a whopper. I bet we have 50 companies in America that spend more than the European Union on embryonic stem cell research. Where are all the screaming liberals who cry about "going it alone"? They are on the front lines lamenting the fact that we are not spending 1000xs more, even though we spend more than anyone else combined.

World Reacts to U.S. Stem Cell Plan

The article is dated August 2001. At that time though,

Quote:

Four countries - Austria, Germany, France and Ireland - ban all embryo research. France plans to change its law to open the possibility of stem cell research.

I don't know if they have changed the laws or even allow that research (much less fund it with taxpayer money) in those countries.

http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_02/b3915052.htm

Quote:

More worrisome for the Asians is the growth in alternative sources of funding for stem cell research in the U.S. While Bush's reelection ensured that the National Institutes of Health will not be opening its coffers to U.S.-based researchers in embryonic stem cells, on Election Day voters in California approved Proposition 71, which will provide $300 million a year to scientists conducting such research in the state. That will make it harder for the Asians to attract top scientists. Seoul, for instance, has dished out a total of just $27 million over the past two years in public money for stem cell research. Funding in Singapore and other countries also pales in comparison to what California plans to spend. ``There's going to be a very impressive network'' in California, says Randy Schekman, a professor of cell and developmental biology at the University of California at Berkeley and an adviser to the Singapore government. While he admires the ``gung ho attitude'' of Singaporean policymakers, Schekman says Proposition 71's basketload of money could overwhelm what the Asians can offer. ``We are going to attract an awful lot of people who will be eager to move'' to the Golden State, says Schekman.

California may not be the only worry. Britain has a relatively liberal policy toward stem cell research and may soon kick-start funding for it. And at least five other U.S. states are looking to fund stem cell research, too. Even some of Asia's most prominent boosters concede that the region will have a tough time matching what the Americans have to spend. Singapore is building a scientific community, but currently ``it's sub-optimal,'' says Colman. ``The people who wrote Prop 71 are trying to recruit people right now. And when those top people go, so will their teams.''

I am still trying to find some global figures on Stem Cell funding. From what I can tell, the State of California alone spends more than any other nation on stem cell research.

What a crisis.

What American President has spent the most money on stem cell research? George Bush. What country spends the most on stem cell research? The United States of America.

http://mbbnet.umn.edu/scmap.html

That is a map that shows the leading genome sequencing research centers.

13 of them are in the United States. Another 4 are in Canada, right on our border. Canada has the second most of any other nation. Japan, which has the second biggest economy in the world has 2.

Man is this a crisis of biblical proportions.

From your link...

Quote:

Countries colored in brown represent about 3.4 billion people, more than half the world's population. All have a permissive or flexible policy on human embryonic stem cell research

Notice the color of the US? Notice that most other major industrialized countries (Spain, France, England, Canada, Russia, China, India, Brazil, South Africa, etc. etc. etc.) are brown?
