Psilocybe aztecorum
    #4220885 - 05/26/05 01:30 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Is this strain also known as Mazatapec, or is it a different altogether?

I first found it here....

Mushroom Site

Then "verified" here...

Erowid Known Strains

I would like to know if this IS Mazatapec or something different. I want to know because I am very interested in the actual strain that the Aztecs took...

I am guessing that it is indeed the same strain from what the two pages state, but I just want to make sure.

Maybe a mod could move this to the mushroom hunting forums and let them take a stab at it?

The mazatapec strain I'm familiar with is a P. Cubensis strain.

Seems as though Erowid actually linked their info "from" mushroom john... very interesting indeed! I sent him/her/it an email and hopefully we will find out soon enough... On a different note... anyone know the hyperreal/erowid connection?

Edit...

This adds a piece to the puzzle but by no means solves it...

Hyperreal

It is not a strain, and it is not the strain known as Mazatapec. Psilocybe Cubensis is the species of that strain, this is a different species all together, and is found on a mountain in Mexico.

this appears to be a vari. of Psilocybe Mexicana and not a cube. at all.

from allen watts,

Wasson took a closer look at the flowers, which hadn't yet been fully
identified by modern botanists. The first thing that caught his attention were
what seemed to be mushrooms (naturally, since he was an amateur mycologist).
These were eventually identified as Psilocybe aztecorum, or the renowned
psilocybin mushrooms that grow only on the sacred volcano Popocatepetl in
southern Mexico, near where Xochipilli was unearthed. Carved on Xochipilli's
stone body are moths feasting on the mushrooms -- not ordinarily moth food.
However, these moths seem to represent departed spirits feasting on "the food
of the gods," as Wasson put it, "to whose world the mushrooms transport for a
brief spell the people of this sad workaday world."

Yes Dean, MJ sent that back to me as well... which leads me to my next two questions.

1. Anyone ever experience or try to grow this species?
2. Are the spores in circulation?
