whats the big deal about amanita m?
    #4220505 - 05/26/05 12:09 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I saw a lot of posts about them last year but have been told they are poisonous. why are many ppl happy to find them? why hunt them? I passed up several of them last year afraid to mess with them.

well actually, even the shrooms people trip of off are poisonous, psylocibe (sp) is a poison (so i hear) but it wont kill you unless its a really high dose.

also amanitas can be eaten, but are in the same family as poisonous ones, so you have to be careful, find the right one and your good, you can actually order them online on some sites, they are legal in the US

Sure it's a serotonin inhibitor, but poisons have different ways of working. I believe the evolutionary "purpose" of psilocybin was to prevent predators from eating these mushrooms.

As to the starter of this thread goes:

I suppose that could be argued, but what use is a chemical that causes halluciations (sometimes terrifying) to a mushroom (or plant) other than being a poison?

It serves no metabolic or other life-essential purpose.

i like to beleive its an evolutionary approach towards a conciousnes profoundly different from our own and undetectable by conventional observation. like a comatose dream. perhaps we are that dream. perhaps thats why the stuff of our minds that makes our personal universes tangeble is so much like that of mushrooms. oooooooo.

The amanita family is among the most deadly.. amanita phalloides, for example, the Death Cap, and Amanita ocreata... Destroying the Angel...

But Amanita Muscaria is legal in the US, and has a different trip than psilocybin, that's probably why it's wanted more. That and the mushrooms in Mario look like muscarias.

So it goes.

Intoxicant might be a good word to use instead of poison. It implies a toxic reaction, despite the fact that in this case that reaction might be the intended one.

A. muscaria is described as "toxic", but not poisonous.

A. muscaria is not a psilocybian mushroom, but is still considered a hallucinogenic.

...says Gumby dude :smirk:

I believe it is highly unlikely that the evolutionary "purpose" of psilocybin is to prevent predators from eating these mushrooms.

As to poisons or not poisons, every substance has it's LD50 value. Dosis sola facit venenum.

Well, serves no purpose other than a "poison" in the mushroom that I am aware of. If you know of some life-essential purposes then let me know.

What other purpose could there be for psilocybin than a poison? Perhaps it's just a byproduct of the mushroom's metabolism that just *happens* to affect our perception of reality.

I'm interested to hear what others think.

Amanita contains a chemical called muscinol. It gets you high, but I would not call it tripping. I've heard it tastes excellent when cooked also..

psilocybin isn't even as toxic as nicotine, try reading a little befor you post

Short Term Toxicity

Psilocybin does not qualify as a highly toxic substance when one uses traditional measures of acute toxicity such as the LD 50 (the dose required to kill 50% of experimental animals, usually rats.) Psilocybin has an LD 50 of 280mg/kg. In comparison, the LD 50?s of LSD, THC (the active compound in marijuana), and mescaline are 30mg/kg, 42mg/kg, and 370 mg/kg. Thus, when death is considered as the toxic endpoint, psilocybin is one of the least toxic of the hallucinogens. Also, the potential for dependence (physical addiction) of psilocybin and hallucinogens in general is minimal to non-existent, which also tends to support the contention of the relative safety of psilocybin in comparison to other narcotics. However, fatalities and injuries have resulted from falling or car accidents caused by short-term behavioral and perceptual impairment. In a survey of adolescent Psilocybe users, 13% reported serious injury such as head trauma and loss of consciousness.

found on google, directed me back to this site:)
