How long will websites store my IP address?
    #4219808 - 05/25/05 09:03 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I am not computer savvy, but from what I understand every
time I visit a website my IP address is logged or recorded on
that site. How long do websites typically hold on to this info?

Do they hold on to this forever or is the data cleared out
periodically?

Is all the concern justified, has anyone ever been track down for
simply viewing some site or posting on one?

it depends on the administrator. Large sites probably prune their logs quite often, due to the excessive size.

some other large sites may not even log individual page requests due to large size.

Other small sites may never delete their logs at all, its all up to the person in charge. when in doubt, assume they dont.

on another note, i do not think you can be tracked down for simply viewing a website. and unless the website was a giant national recurity risk, i doubt they would waste the time.

it is very time consuing and costly to track someone down from the authorities point of view. your ISP may work with them, but they usually need a warrant for your provider to give them information on who's account actually matches the ip.

Maybe you might want to explain further what kind of site you are talking about. Since this is your first post, i will assume you are talking about this place. I may be incorrect. But i am pretty sure that the shroomery cleans their logs quite often. The traffic on this site is so large, that if they tried to track down everyone who viewed this page, they would be after millions of people.

Thanks for the reply
I just found out about IP addresses and how they work.
I started thinking about all the drug related sites (like
this one)I have visited in the past, and I got worried that
I may have left some sort of permanent trail leading
back to me for years to come.

Because the way I see it drug laws will get harsher and
law enforcement will get more sophisticated technology.

But after reading your post I think I dont have too much
to be concerned about.

I wouldnt worry. Those posting pictures, and talking in depth about what they are doing @ home may cause authorities to investigate. Even then, its a long papertrail to get to them. If you are doing nothing but browsing, and reading, with the occasional post/question, you have nothing to worry about.

if you are still a little worried, you can bounce through a proxy. they act as a relay, and you connect to them, and they connect to websites. This isnt fool proof, but when its time to trace you, it's twice, if not more work for them.
