First Grow, air pump question...

Hi, i am busy collecting all the items im gonna need for my first grow. Im building an incubator (using the method with a fishtank heater, and putting a container within a container of water). I have only decided to give this a go about 3 days ago (been reading up on the teks for a while tho), and so far have a 300W Heater, and a Thermometer/Hygrometer. Will have my light soon aswell. Once i have all the "accessories", i will purchase all the actual ingrediants like vermiculite, brown rice powder etc etc. Now, my concern is with the fruiting chamber, ive noticed a lot of people putting air pumps in, this is not an option for me. The reason i cant use one is because i still live at home, so this is gonna be a major "stealth operation", lol. Will this be a problem if i cant have a fishtank pump???
BTW, if ur also living at home with parents, use my idea, its simple. Im gonna buy a pair of big, old wooden stereo speakers (the ones that have a 12 or 15" sub in, so they are like 30cm deep, 50cm wide and 80cm High, get them for like 30$AU second hand, who cares if the speakers are torn and messed up, its the case i need). To my parents, these are gonna be a so called "project speaker", lol, that im going to use to change the actual woofer and tweeter for some better quality ones in a few months time, my parents wont even question that (im really into sound stuff).
They will have removable grills (the black material that covers the actual speakers so they cant be seen), then using a jig-saw im gonna remove the entire front panel(panel with the actual speakers on), only leaving the connections for the grills to fit on. So then i can lay them on their backs, in the corner of my room, inbetween my desk and a wall, so that the face thats missing is facing up, im gonna build my incubator into one of the boxes, and my fruiting chamber into the other, then put the grills back on. So when my parents come in theyll just see 2 speaker boxes (the grills hide whats inside), not realising whats going on, hehehe.
So yeh, sorry about the rant, but i thought some people who are in my position might appreciate an idea like this. As for the question, do i have to have an air pump, or is it just something that can help with fruiting??

air pumps are used to replace the manual process of fanning and misting

I would highly recommend one. I thought i was just be able to fan every day. I fanned at least six times a day and got aborts. Added the air pump and everything fruits nicely now. THey help a ton.

Sadly, its not an option for me, unless they sell COMPLETELY silent air pumps. Just wanted to make sure that they werent a COMPLETE requirement for success.

I used a pump for awhile back in my grow days, but that damn humming would drive me nuts. Fanning even seemed more effective, but maybe that was just my imagination.

Yeah i was worried about the humming as well but i my setup is right behind my mini fridge so the humming mixes well with the fridge humming.

If your just incubating your jars (growing mycelium) then you do not need a pump. If you are growing mushrooms from mycelium, then yes you probably need an air pump for proper air exchange.

or you could jsut build your own with some rubberbands to suspend teh pump and use some sound dampening material around it. The prices on those arent too bad though.
also.. if you have the $ they make pumps with pistons that are damn quiet instead of the vibrating diaphramb design
