Blood clots
    #4217443 - 05/25/05 03:56 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

My mom told me that a blood clot can travel from a wound in one of my extremities can travel up to my brain, clot there, and kill me.

Does anyone know if this is true?  I have a wound that I did not seek treatment for and now I'm worried.  I did a search and I got a lot of stuff about strokes and other scary stuff...

Does anyone know if she is just blowing info out her ass or what?  (she is a medical technician)

I may try and seek medical help for this wound tomorrow, but I think it would be too late to do anything, because if it isn't stitched within 6-12 hours you can't stitch it after that...

hmmm i don't think that's true... i know it can happen with trombosis (when blood clots in your arteries when you sit/lie around too long)... blood basically clots in your arteries and if one of those clots frees itself and travels with your blood stream to your brain serious things can happen...

i have never heard it happen with wounds though... and i can't imagine this being possible especially since wounds are on the exterior and not in the arteries... how a blood clot from an exterior wound can find its way into the blod stream is beyond me...

Thrombosis is very real. Not sure how often this happens though. Probably very low %. I was worried about it one time when someone was putting a needle into my vein which had a scab over it already.

It can actually happen. If you get like a bad bruise of something, the clot can definitely travel and cause a lot of problems. If you're worried, I would go get it checked out.

I've never heard of clots getting into your system from a wound. A google search didn't bring anything up about it either.

I had a blood clot that I swear was caused by St Johns Wort.

I'd been doing the stuff for 2 weeks and had what felt like a heart attack whilst overtaking a car at 60 mph !!!

Once I got my senses together I drove home and spoke to my neighbor (she's a manager at the hospital) and she told me to go straight to A&E.

They wired me up for a ECG and the nurse gasped at the results and said in a loud voice "OH MY GOD!"

Turned out a blood clot had passed through my heart and lodged in my lungs!!!

I was in hospital for over a month and they pumped me full of Warfarin and other anticoagulants which didn't have any effect for ages because St Johns Wort changes the enzymes in your liver therefore rendering other drugs useless !!!

When they eventually kicked in I nearly OD'd on the stuff !!!

I'll never touch that shit again.  :frown:

It's True.
The chances of it happening from an open wound that might require stitching are slim IMHO.

Ever wonder why some threads end up with 1 shroom ratings? Weird.

Seems pretty pointless to me. I'm never gonna choose to read or not read a thread based on the rating.

i hate that mentality.
people don't make St. John's wort. it occurs naturally.
You should sue yourself for not researching the very well known side effects before taking it on a regular basis.
