Dehydrated? You probably are... 2

The human body is made up of approximately 60% water. The human brain is at least 75% water.
Every function of the body depends on water. Water carries vital elements: oxygen, hormones, chemical messengers, etc, to all parts of the body, and carries toxic waste away from the cells. Water is needed for making new blood, for lubricating the minute vessels inside the body. Water is the basis of all bodily fluids and regulates the body temperature. Without sufficient water to wet all parts equally, the remote parts of the body do not receive these elements. When there is a water shortage, some parts of the body are forced to go without.
In this age of processed foods, caffeinated drinks, sugary desserts, salty snacks, chemical preservatives, alcohol, cigarettes.. you name it.. our bodies are constantly trying to flush away all the toxic things we put into them while attempting to maintain everyday function. Each of us loses 10 cups of water a day just from normal activity. Add in a hot day, some exercise, a little booze, and dehydration is inevitable.
The obvious signs of mild dehydration include fatigue, loss of energy, headache, body ache, sticky mucous, dry mouth, thirst, dark colored urine, irratability, and dizziness. By the time you actually feel thirsty, significant dehydration has already occured. And as we age, our bodies become less sensitive to thirst, often mistaking the signs of dehydration with hunger or other symptoms.
One major symptom of severe dehydration is muscular pain. Dehydration can also cause exaggerates histamine production. Histamine is a vital chemical messenger in the brain that takes care of drought management.. and serves as the body's warning system to slow down, conserve water, and replenish fluids. When the body is dehydrated, histamine become more active, causing pain in the nerves wherever a shortage is found.
Ever had a pounding headache after a hard night of drinking? That is caused by lack of water. Alcohol is an excellent diuretic, drying up our bodies. As the brain shrinks, the nerves react, causing pain in the membrane and warning us to replenish the body with water or die.
Modern medicine's answer to this natural reaction is to prescribe inhibitors that block the pain-causing effects of histamine. Anti-histamine and analgesic medicines like ibuprofin and acetaminophen do not cure the cause of the pain, but merely offer a panacea to the symptoms. On top of that, the drugs actually cause further dehydration.
If dehydration persists, it becomes symptom-producing, and in time.. develops into a disease condition. Severe dehydration can cause high blood pressure, stress, and depression. Some doctors say that continuous dehydration causes chronic ailments like allergies, arthritis, hypertension, heart palpitations, bladder problems, kidney and liver ailments, constipation, dementia, and a host of other life threatening diseases, including Alzheimer's, asthma, and cancer.
Very little research has been done on the subject of dehydration and illness because the pharmaceutical companies do not want people to understand the basic effects of water and their health. Rather than curing illness, drug companies manufacture chemicals that not only cover up the symptoms, but can even cause health conditions to worsen. Strong pressure within the industry, which depends on the perpetuation of illness to make money.. does not permit serious investigation into curing diseases.
Our medical professionals educated to treat pain and disease with drugs, recieve very little instruction on natural medicines and basic nutrition. However, hundreds of hours of their education, funded largely by the pharmaceutical industry, involves the study of drugs. No one can argue that drug manufacturing companies are businesses interested in selling products. However, when the main agenda is to make money, then prevention, basic nutrition, and simple solutions like home remedies go against their policy. People continue to get sicker while the health industry gets richer. One has to ask if pharamaceutical companies are out to help people at all.
So what is the solution? Dehydration and its symptoms are corrected naturally with water. 1 gallon per day, is about right for the average person. Sip water at regular intervals throughout the day. If you exercise and/or sweat a lot, you need significantly more. Drink before, during, and after strenuous exercise. Most of the water you get should come from drinking it, but you also receive a lot of water (not to mention tons of healthy vitamins and acids) from fresh fruit. Vegetables also are a good source of water and vitamins and minerals.
Also.. forget sports drinks. They contain sucrose (a type of sugar) and calcium chloride (salt). Both of these things dehydrate. The water and elecrolytes in the drink is barely enough to compete. You best source of natural electrolytes is in fresh fruits and vegetables. If you eat a healthy, sensible diet of plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and plenty of water.. you do not need to worry about elecrolytes and salt.. these things will be provided naturally in your diet.
So go ahead, don't be afraid to chug down a couple glasses of water.. you may piss a lot, but that is a good thing. It means you are hydrated, and the water is flushing toxins from your body. Your body will thank you for it.
And don't forget to eat your fruits and vegetables!

tea has caffeine.. even so called de-caf tea and coffee still has small amounts of caffeine in it. Caffeine dehydrates. Maybe de-caf won't dehydrate as MUCH, but it still will. You can still drink tea, but balance it with water. Note that just because you are pissing a lot doesn't mean you are hydrated. Alcohol will make you piss like a racehorse, but that's just because it's draining all the fluids out of you.

yeah but liquids are not water. Just because it HAS water doesn't make it water. Soda has tons of caffeine AND sugar, coffee is just as bad, if not worse.. even de-caf coffee has oils that are harmful to the body. I'm not saying don't drink them if you want to, but you need to replace that water, with water. Sugar also drains mineral salts from the bones, tissue, and cells of the body. Again, fruits and vegetables will replace mineral salts.

i used to have uncontrollable mood swings every other 15 minutes, insomnia & cramps from my liver & kidneys. the mood swings i could tolerate barely, but the cramps hurt soo bad it felt like i was getting stabbed or i was passing a stone.
so i quit all junk drinks, i only drink water (mainly) & juices. its been a few months & i feel great. i can wake up & sleep when i want to as well.
water = k3y.

Yeah, I would get to work some mornings and drink a coke or something like I should have been chugging water and I knew that I was being stupid, but your mind and habits can cause you the biggest problems of all. Once you break free of those old habits, you can see how reckless you were, sometimes.

I forget how the soda companies lulled me back. This thread has done me good, I need to get off the caffeine, I have no real need for it. I am actually drinking off of a gallon of water now.

yeah i know. for example, in a supermarket you can get some generic pilsner for 1,50 DKK per bottle - that is around 25 cents (US). the cheapest i've ever seen a 0,5 litre bottle of water is around 10 DKK (which is about $1,70).

Hydration is very important. Just don't over-do it. There is such a thing as to much water.

So, will you be fighting dehydration with an MSR miniworks water filtration unit?
