Help me build my fruiting chamber
    #4217212 - 05/25/05 03:58 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

There's a picture of the lower half of the closet I want to seal off and turn into a custom fruiting chamber. What I am after is a shelved system in a sealed plastic environment (I have acquired a roll of -awesome- doublethick plastic, good for the purpose), kind of like the chambers many around here have called "marthas". Go out and buy one, you say? I say nay, I'm more into building one, and I dont like the flimsy construction of those things.

What I have:
Lots of good plastic, ^^that much space (I put shoes there so you could tell how much space "that" is), duct tape, various shelving options, lots of odds and ends I find around to solve problems that come up, etc etc.

What I'm thinking:
Plastic the walls and floor, install a beam across the top, and then run a piece of plastic from the back wall forward, sealing onto the sides up to the beam and sealing to the back and the beam, folding over and attaching somehow to the floor where it all seals up. Cut a large hole in the front, large enough to work through, and build some kind of resealable connection for that door.

What is your input? Any tips, for making the chamber effective? pitfalls I should look out for? wisdom and experience you could share? Any input is totally welcome, thanks guys

maintaing temps will be hard.
what I USED to do that worked well for the same sized space, is use corrugated sign plastic.
you know, the stuff fast-food joinds put out with promotions on them, if you know someone who works at one you can get some old ones, cut to size, duck-tape all the verticies.
put in some shelving, spray it out with alcohol. put in an automatic ultrasonic humidifier, and a single christmas light. i did it and it gave me perfect humidity and temp, i used it to grow these.

that was the second flush
the third was nice too.

youll want a polyfill vent or two. but the corrugated plastic will insulate for temp

don't attach directly to the floor-- instead use something like the corregated plastic mentioned above to create an artificial floor for the chamber

if you arent careful and moisture gets too high, your floor might flood. thats why carpet sucks. its a big mold score.
either have it up on the shelf there, or get a carpet protecter (like for computer chairs)

of course the floor would be covered, not so much to protect crappy cream colored carpet, but to protect my friends growing in the chamber from all the shit that grows in carpets.

New question. If I were to build a chamber as described, what would be the best way to humidify it? I have an air pump/bubbler setup, and cant afford to buy other equipment right now.

do you have a value village?
i ALWAYS find cheap ultrasonic humidifiers there.
they always work.
and the always have automatic gauges. so you just set the dial near the top, close it up, and let it grow shrooms.
it can sit inside the chamber and will shut off if the atmospheric RH reaches the desired setting.
you can set the volume high so if you open it up, youll know its working because when the RH is comprimized it will start pumping out clouds.
honestly, i dont understand why people over complexify things with estimating timers and vaporizers.

ohyes, if you cand recognize an untrasonic humidifier, just open it up it should have an exposed metal circle at the bottom of a depression in the basin. its the exact same thing you get at a pet store for a tank fogger. but self-contained and automated.
a dream come true for mushroom cult, i think.

What do you think of this idea:

I use my heavy plastic on a frame made of 1.5 inch pvc pipe, which I will build a box out of, big enough to put a bunch of casings inside. on one end the corner will have an extra pipe sticking out of the plastic to connect to a purified humid air source, and the other end an exhaust out only valve, with holes throughout the inside of the pipes. This allows for maximum air flow with minimum risk. If the explanation isnt good enough, I'll post pics in a week or so when its done, because I have to build this thing now that its in my head.

I hate to double post and all, but I really need help and this is better than making a duplicate thread. I have had a bit of a new turn of events, and a friend of mine is funding my fruiting chamber for me as a gift, to a $300 limit

I am thinking some kind of greenhouse setup. I have already found, at value village, a cool mist and ultrasonic humidifier, so I can use either or both. I will be using the chamber for probably 50/50 casings at least until I get around to setting up a H/poo source and system. What kind of prices have you guys paid for your greenhouses/marthas? Whats the best way/tek for setting one up for air exchange, temp, and humidity? Will I have better luck at WalMart or Homegrow Depot (er, home depot)?

I set up my 4 tier greenhouse complete and ready to go for about $50.

Hit the goodwills. Use the money for things you might not be able to find so easily.

Greenhouses run in price from $20-$50.

Good Luck. I have friends who help fund some of my adventures also, lol.

Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony.

looks good.. You have nearly the kind of setup I'm looking for. I dont suppose you have a tek somewhere with details about how it was put together, timer setup, how the humidification/temps work, etc..

what is the strongest and weakest point of your 4 tier setup?

Right now, the only forseeable problem is space. The temp is controlled by my home temp. The humidity is running at 93% with just a coolmist running on a timer. Everything is going great so far. I'm setting up one now twice that size, well, about twice.

that should hold me for a month or so.
