buy some slug bait from your local garden center, leave the spiders, they WILL NOT bother your pach at all, accept they willl kill the bugs that will. and if squirrels or birds become a problem (if innoculated with grain) buy a plastic hawk or owl

slugs=bowls with beer in them, the slugs are attracted to them and drown. Don't use salt for the other inects, use dolomite. Don't use poisons.
Try to identify those insects that are in your patch, and do a search on google.com for the best way to get rid of them. Ask yourself why there would be a concintrated number of a certain type of insects in your patch. Are they feeding? Are they breeding?
Keep in mind this is the outdoors, you're bound to see a few insects crawl over your patch every now and then... Just make sure it's actuallty a problem before you pour alcohol in a spray bottle and flame-spray the surface of your patch.

What's dolomite? Would it work to just make a circle around the patch with insect repellant mix?

I use a pellet gun to keep the squirrels and birds away.

Dolomite can be used as a non-toxic pesticide. You might be able to find some "diatomaceous earth" easier. To explain what it does... it's crystals, they come into contact with the waxy bodies of insect and they abrase the. The insects lose water and die.

When I cleared the ground for my patch and went back the next day, I noticed the little red ants I had seen before and already built many openings/tunnels in the ground, however, i just threw the shit down on top of it, think they;ll be a problem?

Damn will the ants raid my shroom field? I did kinda bury all of them in their homes, they'd best not be hungry, grudge-bearing ants by the time they get out or Ive going to have to take drastic measures.
I know dieataemaceous earth or however the f ck its spelled, but havent seen it any where, ive heard people saying dolomite, saw that at a hydro shop near but was under the impression it was a material similiar in purpose to hydroton or grodan cubes, hydro shizzle, but i just saw an outside of the bag.
What if I got some of those little poison ant traps and placed them like 10 feet away from the patch, do they lure ants in and then play them? That'll teach them. The last thing I need is an army scavenging my pins before they even get big.

some species of ants love mycelium, while others prefer rotten meat, and then there are leaf cutter ants. if they become a problem, diatomaceous earth, is available at most garden centers or pet stores. or you can use Borax power, or a mixture of the two. what Borax does is, it sticks to their legs so they carry it back to the nest, where it becomes slow death for the whole colony

you probably heard that from me:) used coffee grounds works as a preventative, but planting a crop on top of an ant colony this may call for more drastic measures.
