Baking Jars in oven

I lack a pressure cooker. I'm not wealthy enough to buy one either. I tried hip's oven tek tonight and lost everything due to the shitty bag tearing. What would happen, if I made up all my pf style jars, fitler discs covered with tinfoil layer and hole poked in it. Placed them (the jars) all inside an oven bag with a cm of water in the bottom to prevent them from drying out while baking.. place all this in an oven tray and bake it at like 135-150 celcius.. it would get hot enough to kill all the germs.. really the only thing that I'm unsure of is if the jars will shatter.. I know I would definatly have to let them cool slowly in the oven.. but, do you think this would work? It could help alot of people who don't own pressure cookers if it did... I think I'm going to do it.. I do oh so want to grow now... Well, I'll let you know how it comes along.. I think I'll try it with only 2 or 3 to start.. if it works then I'll do up a few dozen jars. Updates to come.

I was thinking about this, and then I realized: you don't need a pressure cooker anyhow. Lot's of people sterilize without them. It goes something like this: Put your jars in a pot of water and cook them. You have to put something between the jars and the bottome, like a dish towel, so that the heat doesn't go straight into your jars. I don't remember all the details, but if your oven thing doesn't work out, don't despair, it can be done.

This picture might help... I've done boiling for the longest time, but you can't do cool things like rye berries and other neat substrates.. Also, I still got some contams in my brf even with 1 1/2 hours of boiling... Anyways, comments on if anyone think this will work would be nice.. Adobe Photoshop 6.0 Good luck in your growing man, I wish I had a pressure cooker.. but I live in the ghetto.. my mom makes me french fries and chicken fingers.. no need for a pressure cooker here! Anyways, I think it will work.. I hope.. exploding jars wouldn't be cool... I think, if they heat up gradually.. and cool down gradually... they will be fine... I could be wrong, but I hope I'm not.

No matter how hot you make your oven, you will not be able to make the water in the bag or the water in your substrate hotter than 100C. That is the boiling point of water at sea level and it will maintain that temperature until it is all boiled away. Then your substrate will get hotter but it will be all dried out. That is why a pressure cooker is necessary. At 15 psi the boiling temp of water is raised to 121C and is able to kill the nastiest of the nasties.

Heathadelic is totally correct. Great idea and great diagram tho. FYI, I just moved from PF to grain and had some problems cause I was boiling jars (thinking that was hot enough). Turns out I needed a pressure cooker, however I had no extra money so I didn't want to buy one. I looked on Ebay and found a brand new 8 quart for like $38 with shipping. They had lots of good used ones too. You could prolly get one pretty cheap if you check Ebay.
