I saw Autechre in Chicago recently. I'm an electronic music fan but I gotta say that was garbage. We left early.

I've read that Autechre can be interpreted as short-hand for Audio Architecture. So I say Aw Tek Er

I techno. I like the old school djs/producers like Richie Hawtin, Woody McBride and Frankie Bones. If I'm in the right mood I like the more banging stuff like DJ Rush. Lately I've liked the minimal, glitchy stuff like Matthew Dear and Sean O'Neal. I'm not on top of the scene like some of my friends but I often tag along and have a blast.
I thought Autechre was severly lacking in flow and it just didn't sound good to me. Here's my friend's review who I pretty much agree with:
"they opened their set with some of the strangest sounds i have ever heard in my life...but strange not in a good way...the sounds were so alien and creepy...it made me feel very uncomfortable and annoyed...i like good mindfuck music but this stuff just made me feel like there was an evil presence in the room...the music they were making seemed like some satanic ritual to conjure a demon into the middle of the room...the room had no energy as they hammered away making these sounds...we stuck around for the first half hour of their set, at which point there was a moment of release of all the tension (kind of) and it was music that was almost bearable and enjoyable, but then just as they got to that point (which lasted two minutes tops), the music took another dark direction and went plodding on...the music made my skin crawl which i guess is something - it created a reaction in me - however i would prefer to have a more uplifting joyful reaction but autechre obviously werent in the mood for that..."
So yeah it just wasn't my cup of tea. I was board out of my mind. We didn't stay for much of it though so maybe it got better I dunno. Also the light show sucked because it was basically non-existent. And the majority of the people there REALLY creeped me out. I've had better Chicago club experiences that's for sure.

well, that's ae. you either dont get it, or you love it. were you familiar with their work before you went?
I thought they were real tight - I love their sound - IDM is my favorite style. I am not a fan of standard techno - I did enjoy Hawtin from the early detroit party days up until the decks,efx,909 tours he did in 2000 or so - thats about as "banging" as I can stand. If there is a continous boomboomboom beat and all the standard techno sounds, I get bored.
as for a light show...well, ae never does them really. they are very minimal. ae isnt easy to swallow for the uninitiated especially their latest material.
I agree that ae is on the dark side of things. they are definitely not uplifting - they are the soundtrack to a cold mechanical future vision. quite unlike the standard dance floor acts.
I thought rob hall fucking rocked it - 100% skam records - I love all those records he played.

actually my best friend just attended an AE show in Seattle, and said it was the most boring performance of anything he's ever been to.
No light show, no visual screen, nothin. just 2 guys in front of laptops. I suppose the only way I would enjoy a show like that is if I knew every song by heart and I could tell what (if any) manipulation for live purposes the band did, but alas he could not.
so I'll be missing them too when they come to my state...

ae never does light shows or any sort of spectacle as do many (most?) IDM artists out there - every warp, skam, toytronic, breakin', rephlex show I've been too has avoided the spectacle.
Their sound was great and there is nothing to watch. That is where dancing comes into play. Involvement rather than passive viewing.

OMFG! I'm angered right now because i was supposed to go see autechre live this month, but couldn't make it and had to give my ticket away, and now people are saying they went and it was boring. AND EVEN LEFT EARLY?! Even sober, i would enjoy their live music to the fullest, but altered...they would remain gods. Also, autechre is the most uplifting music i know of! I can see how it's machinistic, and futuristic sounding, yet it has the most beautiful essence.
I gaurantee that if ANY of you guys went to an Autechre show on mushrooms, acid, mescaline, hell, even 2ci or 2ce, you'd love the hell out of it. And that's NOT to say you can't enjoy them sober, i do nearly every day.

I was on mushrooms and that didn't help. My friends are avid electronic music fans and know Autechre from records they've released. I haven't heard these records but apparently the sound is quite different from the live p.a. they did when we saw them. It just wasn't my cup of tea.
