Disassembly + Pics: desiccant pack with built in recharger!
    #4214595 - 05/24/05 04:32 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

This product has probably been on here before.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...=sporting-goods
I saw these around the local hardware stores for $20, and there was a sale on these recently for ~$15 so I decided to pick one up as it would save me all the trouble of using my oven to recharge my silica beads.
I had a basic idea of the construction, but decided to take it apart just for fun.

It has a nice ammount of silica in there. supposedly it will hold 8-10oz of water.. not bad if you are using some fan drying beforehand to get rid of most of the water. The color changing beads (blue when dry pink when wet) are just silica beads with a heavy metal (cobalt), but they tell you when its time to recharge.

I plan on testing the temp of the heating plate when i get home, bu here are the pics:

had to empty everything into coffee cups before cracking it completely open.. quite a bit of beads!

here it is cracked open, that is just a metal plate suspended in the middle with a heating element clipped in there. the other half just has the tube of blue indicator beads on it.

side shot of the heating plate... not much there really.

closeup of heating element. there are no markings so i am not sure what it is or where to get it. it would be damn easy to build one of these if you wanted, but for $15 you cant go wrong with a prebuilt one.

so if you go by the rule of 10 parts water for every 1 of dried shroom, then this unit will successfully dry 21-28 grams of shrooms, dry weight, before it has to be completely recharged

Where would you put the mushies?

It'd dry a ounce worth of mushrooms at one time....

correct, but thats if you just throw the shrooms in there with no predrying with a fan or anything.  It takes 8-12 hours of having the unit plugged into the wall to completely recharge the unit. Not sure how long it would take to completely dry 1oz of shrooms.. but if anyone has tried to do this with just silica gel then they can answer that question for me ... im still working on the shroom part. hehe

all in all i think what it can do is worth the $15

and fan drying just by itself can be pretty effective...i'm sure you could get more than an ounce w/o having to recharge it as long as you do that first.

yup, these packs are to be used just like any other desiccant for getting your shrooms cracker dry.  i just figured this one with a built in recharger was pretty

well right out of the box this thing makes my digital radioshack hygrometer read 31% RH when left inside an ziplog bag with this pack.
