Bicycles... those that know, Speak!!
    #4213677 - 05/24/05 10:28 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I am soon to be without any form of gasoline-fueled transportation, and want to use the money from selling my vehicles to buy a nice bicycle.
I don't know much about them, but I do know that I don't want a cheap piece from Anal-Mart or some such.
I'm willing to spend up to $500, if it's worth the money, but I want something that's going to be good enough to ride 100 mile trips and whatnot... as well as inner-city navigation.

So, for those that are knowledgeable in this area... can you offer me some advice?
I'm sure there's plenty of bikers here @ the Shroomery...

The TREK 4500

NICE BIKE!! It's about 5 bills. Here's a brief review;

Trek's 4500 is great for campus commutes, errands, even singletrack adventures. The Alpha Aluminum frame feels light enough to float yet is built tough to hold its own in the durability department. Plus, the 4500's first-rate components include a RockShox Judy TT fork, Shimano drivetrain, Bontrager ACX tires and powerful linear-pull brakes.

If you're in/around the Seattle area, my uncle owns a bikeshop. He'll hook ya up! PM me if interested.

That looks like the pimp-shit... but it's honestly worth $500?

btw, I'm about as far from Seattle as can be, in the U.S. :frown:

To fully answer your question, you'll need to furnish a few preferences. Do you want a mountain bike like the one above?? A road bike like the one below... or a BMX/trick style bike??

depends on what you want. if you just want a bike to get to point A to point B and no playing around in dirt or on the road. might as well get some cruiser with a big comfy seat. but if you want any road racing or mountain bike performance you will have to spend a lot more than 500 because the low end "good" bikes break everything because they have more working parts to break than a cruiser bike will.

Mainly I want something reliable and comfortable that's good for city riding.
It would be a nice side-factor if it would withstand medium off-road use...
but that's not my primary concern.

This bike has got it all. Performance. Innovation. Quality. Style. Value. Whether it?s on the rhythm section of your local dirt jumps, grinding down a rail at your local skate park, or in front of a crowd at the X-Games, this bike has got it all. A Real mans bike.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

--------------------
A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

i have a Specialized Crossroads bike. cost me $350 and i take it everywhere. it's great on the road and on dirt paths. it's a hybrid so it'll comfortably take u anywhere - but not to extremes. Specialized makes awesome bikes so i really think they'd suit u well.

get something like this

it's a womans bike, but they are smooth. You also dont have to worry about mashing your balls on the bar. I had one (in that shape/style but more basic) and it was the best bike i ever owned... on road, off road, it didnt matter, it was smooth. 1 speed but still very good.. i got it for free, and rode the shitt out of it.. make sure it has skinny tires, but nt like the really skinny tires.. this will get you best proformance on street, and little on dirt, but nothign extreem. also, the rack in the back is pimp when you got shit you need to carry... use a bungi cord to hold shit.

and the bike should have the splash guards... it sucks walking into a store with a strip of mud down your back...

note the handle bars and the shape of the bike... this will do you just right, and you could probably pick one up cheap at a yardsale, craigslist, or a bike shop (i wouldnt pay more than $100).

oh yea, basicaly, look for something that looks like a beach cruizer but less heavy duty (keep an eye on the handle bars, they give you a good clue as to how the thing will ride, and you dont want to be huntch down the whole time like on a mountain bike or street bike... you wanna cruiz and pedle....

If you're willing to spend a little more than 500, Novara and Cannondale make superb road bikes. There's one Cannondale (the big boy or something?) has a mountain bike frame with road bike specs, so you get the best of both worlds and so it can ride on dirt trails too, for example.

I'd second this, the Crossroads was the best bike I every owned, gave me many years of service and I still regret giving it away. Hybrids' larger wheels are much better for road riding than mountain bikes, but they still give a comfortable ride. I'd avoid aluminium frames unless you really need the lightness, they're less forgiving.

I want to get a real mountain bike, yes it needs to be atleast $300 dollars or it is too heavy, I have a wanna be mountain bike it is only 150 bucks..but it gets me around.
I want to get a real one, they are so light, after you ride on those things, you think twice about bicycles. I also want to try mountain biking some with a real one of course.. but when I can afford the helmet the camelback and all the equiptment included. I do smoke but what a way to get that shit out of your lungs, besides I ride my bike now..beats the hell out of spending all that damn money on gas...but don't get me wrong I like cars and other vehicles too..

I agree with you, dblaney. Cannondales are excellent bikes and you can usually find one for a decent price, but it will probably be a bit more than 500 bucks. I spent around 700 for my last one and it was a midrange bike.

Do a single speed.

Low maintenance.

Find yourself a used up tired ass mtb with a nice frame FOR CHEAP.

Ditch your shitty old school shifting components.

Have your bike shop order an eno rear hub and tool from www.whiteind.com and lace it up to like a sun ryhno lite or something.

Get the front hub if you feel like dropping a bit more cash and lace to the same.

After that, proceed to rock an extremely low maintenance, pleasureable ride that is ultra functional and ultra fashionable at the same time.

The wheel set should cost you about $300, and you can get something severly outdated shifter wise but cool otherwise for $200 easy.

Singlespeeds are fun, functional, and hip!

Be a cycling hipster fashionista with yer shroom trippin' self!

[edit] Maybe find the hubs online though rather than special ordered from a bike shop, prolly a better deal.[/edit]

Get an old road bike for cheap and get a tune up.

If the shifting parts are fukked, singlespeed it as described by me above.

If your lucky, the frame will have horizontal drop outs, (the spot where the rear wheel rests in the frame) which allow the wheel to move forward and back within it (like a bmx bike) to adjust chain tension.

They are cheap, low maintenence, the obvious choice for bicycle messengers and city dwellers everywhere....

And yes, they are unbelievably fashionable!

You can also look into Nishiki bicycles. They are typically cheaper than some of the larger brands (cannondale, specialized, trek), but have similar components and good frames. Trek usually has a pretty good value as well, although slightly more expensive.

Yea cars are expensive, I cant afford one right now, too many fines and bills...in fact I haven't owned a car since late 2002...it is nice in a way though, cars are a hefty expence a lot of times, they are convienent, but when you can't afford to have one then that is a totally a different story...

No sweat.

Yeah, singlespeeds are totally hip these days.

Do a search on it and see what comes up.

Lots of like biker gang/rebel without a motor type shit.

SS culture is kinda lame imo, but regardless they are functional bikes.

I can see myself traveling 5 miles+ on a bicycle getting around chicago. Are those distances even possible with a skateboard?

hell yea... i use to take the train down to union station... then skate all around the loop all day, sometimes even going all the way up to the north side to grab some food.. but i use to skate all day everyday so my legs were use to it.

biking is alot easier, but i dont like biking in the heart of the city. you have to stop to much cause of all the cars and lights. i feel more comfortable with a board i can just jump off and carry

Get a used Specialized...I had an old Rockhopper that was light and durable w/suspension and paid like $325 for it. Sold it 2 years later for $250.

Rode it 7 miles each way to work daily. Never had a problem.

I'm gonna check into the singlespeed stuff myself...
