ID help for big scaly shrooms
    #4211626 - 05/23/05 09:44 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I found these shrooms in a garden type thing, on mulch. They are really big mushrooms, almost the size of my arm. but unfortunately I don?t have any pictures and sorry if I have a few typos as I am high right now. Here?s a clear description-

Cap-
8-12 cm diameter
4 cm thick
Shape is sort of flat, a little bit curved.
Edge is black; as if it were burnt.
Some parts are smooth and slippery and others are covered in rough, dry scales.
It is scaly. The scales are dark brown and flaky.
Color is golden brown.
Flesh of cap is about 1-2 cm thick, its fairly easy to tear.
Odor is mild, it doesn?t really smell at all except for the wettish smell that all shrooms sorta have.
It doesn?t really have a taste
Gills-
Free from the stem
Spacing is average; you can see each gill
Color is dark purple, and they got white as they dried out

Stalk-
Comes from the center of the mushroom
10 cm long; 3.5 cm thick
Tapers up (I think) but only slightly
Dry feeling
White
Solid
Fairly hard
Veils- (im assuming those are the skirtlike things on the stem that sort of divide it into sections, sort of look like its joints)
Membranous
Leaves a ring (im assuming, since its on the stem?)
Middle of the stem and there are more than one on some stems
Skirtlike, attached at the top and hanging freely like a skirt
Spore Print-
Dark purple, almost black. It looks black when you first look at it but it has a purple tint to it. Very dark.
Habitat-
Found on the ground in mulch in a big garden. I do not know what type of mulch this was but it was for a decorative garden.
Grew solitary but there were many in the area of the garden, along with other mushrooms that looked like crowns and also had scales. I don?t know if they were all the same type but some looked different?
Other-
Very large? I found one that the cap was the size of my hand, and other that were big too. Very cool looking too. Ill post some pictures if I get a chance but I doubt it. If they are necessary, please say so. Also if i missed anything tell me. Thanks for ur healp

nice thorough description

with the large stature, free gills, double membranous ring with flocci on the robust white stem, movable cap scales, nearly black purplish sporeprint, the case for Agaricus seems strong. One of the larger scaly species. Nothing else I can think of fits.

Does it look like any of these?

defintely not active. Some species are edible but most species of agaricus are poisonous.

And i must repeat the mushroom hunters code. When in Doubt, Always throw out.
