I forgot to add a marble or whatever to my LC, is this gonna make it difficult to break it up?

Best shake it up everyday while it is still weak enough to break up, after a few days on its own it forms a tight ball which is hard to suck up, like a ball of cotton wool in water. You can also add so shards of broken glass

Either way works. If you want to store it for years? Simply set a test tube with a septa plug top (or vacutainer)upright overnight.
The myc will all settle to the bottom.
Gently insert a syringe needle & asperate out 95% of the LC fluid. Then, inject sterile water. Then place tube in the fridge. It will remain viable for years.

People have proposed that the limiting factor in LC growth is oxygen supply. It'd be great to see some confirmation of this. Have you ever tried bubbling (HEPA filtered) air through your LC cultures? (Realize this is a touch off topic, but it didn't seem worth starting a new thread over)

Tubing filter lids & the vortex action of a magnetic stir plate bar cause/create sufficient gas exchange to overcome that limiting factor.
So much so that, if left at room temperatures & not agitated/stirred on a daily basis, mycelia will grow a thick mat on the liquids surface. Then, if exposed to adequate light, the surface of the mat will also begin to form primordial knots & pins . Which will most often cause the floating Mat to tip over , as it becomes top heavy.
Best to refrigerate a healthy culture around 40F in darkness, once it is thick with mycelia, in order to stall the growth process.

That's the most impressive LC picture I've seen in my life!
So the "tubing filter lid" is nothing more than a lid into which a tube filled with polyfil has been sealed, right? Presumably a financially constrained person could use a drinking straw and some hot melt glue?

Not sealed. Polyfil is lightly stuffed into the tubing, to allow gas exchange. Rubber vacuum tubing (auto parts store, True Value or Ace Hardware) is less than a buck a foot & a tube of silicone under $4.
Glue gun glue & a drinking straw will not work, a PC temps would melt them.

For very long term storage, a vacutainer should contain mycilia & sterile water. Shorter term, just straight LC is fine - so long as it is kept refridgerated.

Yes, Agar was nice enough to hook me up with this idea not too long ago. For a few dollars and about an hour, I had eight of these ready to go.

They work great. Just make sure your plastic lid is a 1/4 turn lose while PC'ing and tighten before removing from PC. Thanks Agar. You're such a sweetheart. Peace,Love,Happiness and Harmony. Hippie Chick

Aerated LC is important, during boiling most of the gases are driven out of the LC. You should shake it very well to aerate the mixture. I have described this as the catch 22 of filter patches, since if you shake a jar with a filter it will soak the filter allowing contams to grow from the outside through the filter, so with no filter you can shake jars very well every few days which both aerates and breaks up mycelium. Agars ingenious jars have rubber tubes which can be pinched while shaking so the filter is not going to get wet. Agar- maybe you could make a little raft for the mycelium mat to grow into so it would not topple over.

I've been planning to try just this with a wide mesh screen of some sort. I'll report back if I have any success.

It would be interesting to cut an inch thick open cell sponge to fit snugly inside the liquids surface in a quart jar of LC, as a platform for primordia to form on.
The result could be hydroponic shrooms

I think I explained in this thread somewhere.
Asperate culture out of jar, inject into vacutainer. Stand near full vacutainer upright (in a cup or whatever) & set it in the fridge overnight.
By the next day all the myc in it should have settled to the bottom of it.
Insert sterile syringe (gently) & asperate out 95% or more of the LC solution, leaving the myc. With another syringe, inject sterile water into the vacutainer.
