Problems with PF-Tek Cakes
    #4211138 - 05/23/05 07:27 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I am having a few problems with some PF-tek cakes.

1. Some of the substrate stuck to the bottom of the jars after I turned them upside down causing the myc to reach out for them, this made it very hard or impossible to see if the myc had colonized the jar all the way, especially with all the condensation. How do you keep this from happening? Use less water in formula?

2. Also does the verm used in double end casing the cakes need to be sterilized? I mean it will be exposed to bacteria anyways once in the open air.

3. This is one of only 2 cakes that pinned while in the jar and it has some light blue spots on it. Is this bruising or is it contam. I'd hate to throw out one of only 2 cakes with the beginning of mushrooms as the other one with pins had exposed substrate.

1. Don't worry about it, you will be fine. Once you see that the myc has covered the whole surface of the cake, wait 3-5 more days to make sure the middle of the cake is colonized too. Your cakes look good!

2. Nope, doesn't need to be sterilized

3. If your cakes are pinning in the jars it's time to birth them. That blue spot doesn't look too bad but if gets out of control post another pic so we can inspect it

Hey, what's up? I had some of those problems when I did cakes. I tried putting a teaspoon of verm. in the bottom of the jar before loading. This stopped the sticking and helped the mycelium colonize the bottom.

I've done it both ways with equal success, Verm. is pretty sterile out of the bag. It's not hard to sterilize in the microwave though.

It looks like bruising but can't really tell. Keep an eye on it. If it spreads quite fast, it's more than likely a contam.
Good Luck.

I tried to get a better pic on the bluing on the sides, but it came out blurry once I got close. Here is a pic of the top of the same jar, I birthed 2 others that looked like this on the outside and when I lightly scraped the excess exposed substrate I somehow exposed what looked like more substrate underneath, I cauterized the exposed areas. Should I just birth this one anyways since it is already pinning? colonization has slowed almost to a stop past few days.

Hmmm they say never to birth cakes that aren't totally colonized, but if you need to then like you said cauterize the uncolonized parts, then birth. Make sure underneath it is colonized substrate though!

If the cake is pinning and there is possible uncolonized areas, should I birth? I am thinking of just waiting one more day for good measure then birth and cauterize if need be.

Yes definitely birth! Those shrooms are ready to grow!! Don't worry about the uncolonized areas because you already have shrooms growing. BUT, if for some reason it does turn into a contam and shrooms grow out of the contam, that's no good, don't eat.

to keep the premature pinning from happening dont look at your cakes as much and make sure your container is light proof.
