When to "thin" poppies?
    #4192314 - 05/18/05 06:03 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I have a few plots of poppies going right now and the plants are all roughly around 2 inches tall. However, it is apparent that I sowed too close together. For fear of low germination rates I distributed far to many seeds into a small area. The result is plots that are extremely thick, you could compare the density to a plot of grass. My question is...do I NEED to thin these out, and if so, do you have any tips that will help me? I will take some pictures next time I go check on them, should be in a few days. Thanks,

-Cubes

I made the same mistake two years ago, thin those babies out NOW! otherwise you may lose most or all.

They should be at least 3" away from each other, the furthur, the better.

I know it's heart-breaking, but it has to be done. I've actually had luck transplanting them to less dense areas in my plot at that stage.

Damn...more work for me, but I suppose it must be done. Hopefully my babies will survive the move!

I just read on Erowid that transplants usually have a delayed/shorter flowering period.  Also that they need some shelter and companionship, so leave 2-3 in a clump. There is already a  thread about this.  I'm not sure but I thought new topics were supposed to go on the sticky? So I guess you guys can close this. Sorry

popies dont take well to transplants. Thin them to 3-4" for the final thining. But when there small you can let them grow closer and slowly weed out the runts till you have good spacing.

Yea, I will probably just rip some out as opposed to transplanting.

IME if they are not thinned while small, they will choke each other off before they get a chance to grow larger.

So...does this sound good? Instead of trying any transplanting, I will rip some of them out of the ground, so each individual plant has a bit more "breathing" room. Although, by ripping them out, would this cause harm to the roots of the nearby plants? Maybe I could just cut them up real good so they simply die off. My plots are litterally as thick a your average lawn here, its ridiculous. Pics to come.....been lazy...it is a BITCH to get to my plots, real stealth operation going down.

Yeah don't rip them off the ground, use scissors and cut the weakest few down.

If the soil is wet, their hair-thin roots should slip out easily.
