technique questions

i am going to use the "one quart jay way - revisited and the rice method. i have all the items and i would like to ask if anyone has tried this method and does it work. i'm not going to use any vermitie or whatever. just rice and distilled water for the growth medium. let me know.

As far as I know vermiculite (or some similar soil additive) is absolutely necessary to keep the soil porous and help it retain moisture for your little guys to feed on. Why not just use verm... it's like $3.50 a bag?

i may if it is crucial. i have allot of information on this technique and it is different from the riceflour one. i'm going to use regular rice and if it is nessacary i will use it. i may try 6 jars with it and 6 jars without. how would i use it. i'm just going to leave the cakes in the jars and just tip the jars twice a day for the CO2 to leave the jars and fan them. do i put the vermite on top of the cake or what. after i get more money i'm going to buy the deluxe mini shroom kit from - spore trading post - but thats not untill later. well let me know.

if you use whole rice grains it may work, but probably slower. i would reconnend vermiculate in there idf its available. i dont have very much of it left and thers no way 2 get it around here other than mail order from the internet, which i probably should do. it almost definitely will help tho.

1st- dont buy anything from stp, youll get ripped off.
2nd- if youll use whole brown rice, you will want to preboil it so you get the water content correct. do a search for these people: bluhoney, brownpastures... they both have a whole brown rice recipe in this forum in the past 4 months or so. also, look at alien tek's substrate (listed in the grow/find)... its a VERY nice method using brown rice and some additives. it will also instruct you on how to properly cook rice if you havent done it before (some people havent)...
