Question about my products
    #4210464 - 05/23/05 04:41 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

HI, I was wondering if someone could let me know if these trays would work for casing the 50/50 tek, brf jars, 1/2 pint or do they defeat the prupose of casing, bigger or not. Honestly, for the life of me, I can't not find could trays, most of the tin foil ones are to large for my terrium. I cabn't find the black trays my mom uses back home, and htere isn't a home depot near buy and every garden department I go to really has nothing for trays except those ones that have like an inch by inhc holes. My terrium is not really wide, about a foot, bout long, a few feet.
Also, I was told to dunk my cakes I could just add water into the jar. DOes this work just as well? What about the verm on top. Also, they said don't put outside cause of contam. I thought when they are fully colonized its fairly hard for them to get contam casue they can fight I though, or is that totally off.
Also, here is the type of peat moss. I got it casue its the same brand as the verm and perlite I bought, and even if it isn't right, it was only 3 bucks so it ain't the end of the world. This is the info on there website, not alot but maybe someone has used this brand before.

http://www.cil.nu-gro.com/products/product_e.php?prodID=36

SO heres what I got so far.

Or are these trays to small that it defeats the prupose of casing.

Thats jsut the description on the back.

I know I had posted yesterday and someone said get spagnum or somethign like that. Well I did find but they only had it in BIG BIG bundles so thats why I am asking about this kind.
SO thats it. Other than that, the cambos are ripping through the brf pretty nice, pretty excited, first time so I'll keep posting.
Also the reason I'm asking abotu the water in the jars is cause my fridge space is fairly limited.

-I am a newb-

I am using the gladware deepdish containers. Also, I have read from several people that would know> aluminum containers can be eaten away by waste products from shrooms.
Plus, if you use gladware, you can take the tinfoil off the sides and see in to be sure there are no contams underneath.

with those deepdish containers i use 3-4 1/2 pint jars broken up than cased no matter what container you use try to aim for a substrate depth of about 1 1/2 to 2 inches that will be to your advantage

HOw big are the glad ones. And does depth matter. ALso I'm not sure if I understand the alluminum containers can be eaten by waste products from shrooms. WHat kind of waste products.

What about the moss

a byproduct of mycelium growth is acid which of course can eat away an aluminum container and is the reason why you would add a long term buffer like oyster shell to a casing substrate depth is important because a larger subsrate depth can give you larger fruits and bigger flushes. As far as how big the deepdish containers are they are about 6Lx4Wx4D and hold 8 cups

Uh. The kind that agar and other smart people said. I was only repeating what I read from them.

http://www.glad.com/popup_container1a.html

It's this one "Deep Dish: 3 Containers & Lids (8 CUPS / 64 OZ)"

Sorry.. couldn't find the post about the eating through the aluminum. I gotta get to class. Search the posts.

Good luck

Depth really matters with casing's. Try for at least 2"-4". Mycelium is a living thing, so like all living things it produces waste products, piss, while growing. This waste can eat through aluminum after a while. If you are thinking of casing, you should check into spawning your cakes to some type of bulk substrate. It's really not that hard and will make your colonized cakes go a lot further. Good Luck.

So really, these trays woudl be kinda useless then. not to use at all even, those glad onse ound good, you have to put foild around the outside of them though. Anyone got a comment on the moss yet. Sorry for being pushy, but this usually happens to me one here, someone only answers half the question.

You've got um, go ahead and use them. Lot's of peeps do. Just know you will eventually have to replace them. Just replace them with something better when the time comes. It's quite a common practice in this hobby. I've replaced things before I've even used them, lol.
I've never used peat, I like verm and coir. The peat you have says it adds nutrients. I know casing layers are supposed to be more nutrient free. Make sure to adjust your ph. How much nutrious value does that peat have?

I honestly can't say, thats why I posted it. I can't see anything on the bag that says that. It says provides nutrients for roots, cutting, and seeds for faster, maximum growth.
If this is kinda touchy, I'll take it back, what you think.

K, glad to hear I can use these pans. I'll have to get more, but I think I'll get the glad ones now.

Go back and read the TEK again. The first part is just 50/50. Read on and see where it talks about adding lime and oyster shell. This is the plus in 50/50+.

in 50/50+ tek the + denotes the addition of a ph buffer either long term like crushed oyster shell or a short term like hydrated lime

Sorry, like I said, I don't use peat. But casing layers aren't supposed to be nutritous.

ALright, thanks everyone, I guess to be on the safe side, I'll take the moss back, and the trays. I have even a few tubberware containers I coudl sue I guess, I'll jsut make sure to wipe them down really really well, and I'll probably buy more.

I think I can find the calcium carbonat but where can I find crushed oyster shells, the last pet store I was at only had whoel oyster shells.
