diffrent teks??

ok im kinda confused on the PF vs rye and finch seed teks, whats the diffrence? ive looked them up but im still dont really understand, if someone could just explain the main pros and cons of each it would be helpful -thanks

good question, i've tried brf/verm but it sucks and i can't figure if you are suspose to mix finch seed with verm if you do them in halfpint (vs. pint with shaking)

i think saying that brf/verm teks suck is a pretty harsh statement.

there's plenty of happy growers out there using a lot of variations.

heres a hodgepodge of info found here on the forums...

pf tek (brf and verm)
1.) is nice for beginners, because most people dont have a pressure cooker/canner. you only need a large pot to boil your jars in and sterilize that way, where you need a pc for rye/seed/etc.
2.) it is tried and true- it works and will fruit.
3.) pf tek cakes can either be used as whole cakes (birth out of the jar and thats it) or crumbled and cased, where rye/seed you have to case. well... you cant cake it :)
4.) pf tek recipe doesnt require the "finding the best substrate that works for you" thing... rye and seed often have to be experimented with by the individual to find the "right mix"... pf tek pretty much takes the guesswork out of the recipe tweaking and trying.

rye/seed/whole grain teks are nice because
1.) you can work with larger jars (quarts,etc.) where you pretty much need 1/2 pints for the pf tek (taking into consideration the cost-benefit analysis- it takes a lot longer to colonize fully a 1/2 pint pf tek jar than larger ones... the benefit of using larger jars decreases quite a bit when this is taken into consideration. plus, jars can contam more easily the longer they take to colonize ....)
2.) larger jars mean more substrate to work with, and it will generally colonize at a much faster rate when compared to the pf tek jars and size.
3.) rye/seed also doesnt need to be mixed with verm to add an "airyness" to the substrate, meaning there is more available foodsource in the jar, rather than nonnutritive verm. a pf tek cake has only 1/4 cup of brf and 1/2 cup of verm; 2:1 ratio of nonnutritive ingredient to nutritive. meaning the quarts are pretty much more efficient- they dont need a non-nutritive element.
4.) rye/seed can and should be shaken, which allows for faster colonization times. pf tek cakes have the verm layer on top, which while acting as a contam barrier, also means colonizing substrate cannot be mixed with uncolonized...
5.) you can use agar wedges to innoculate rye/seed.

for both,
1.) you can spawn them as well into bulk substrates, but many people use quarts to spawn since there just is more spawn to work with in a quart than a 1/2 pint... meaning faster colonization of the spawn run.
2.) both have a contam barrier
3.) both work in about the same amount of time, relatively...

im sure theres more im forgetting. pf seems more foolproof on paper. but, you never know about paper...

I've used the Alien substrate fairly successfully. Yep, just like it says - put brown rice and quinoa in the pot with 2.5 cups of water and boil, then simmer 20 minutes. Yes, it expands quite a bit. It made enough for me to fill 9 - 1/2 pt jars.

On the contrary , you can use the grains as you would brf in a cake. The only difference is you need a PC
to properly sterilize everything when using grains.
You see, once the colonizing is over the grains are held together quite well. You have yourself a cake. Simple.
