everyone in NY ever heard of a band named Battles?
They opened for Prefuse73 with Beans at the Knitting Factory
on Saturday night.
I would have rather had my head drilled with a press....
fucking cover bands always ruin the show.

lol cover bands need to stay in small time bars or keep practicing till they got there own music to play.

Battles are not a cover band. I've seen them about four times in my life. They're an instrumental band that play original compositions.

I saw that same show in chicago - beans, battles, prefuse73. battles didnt do any covers - they played original material which was most excellent. one of the best shows I've been to this year.
did they really play covers? I dont understand.

Same here. I thought they fit great on the bill with Prefuse too.

the show totally flowed from beans to battles to prefuse.

yeah, I meant opening band.
1. beans' act hasn't changed for 3 fucking years. I've been
listening to that same tired opening act for too fucking long.
I think he played ONE new song.
"Took 2 bitches to the hotel to double team me
woke up and caught them trying to steal my TV"
2. battles was a bad combo of tortoise and anthony braxton,
their sound was whack. They had a couple decent changes,
but on the whole, their shit was meh.
3. Knitting factory west is a shitty venue.

maybe, but the venue is pretty cheesedick.
sound was kookie, no good seating.
prefuse is not really a dance show...so give me
a seat to get drunk in, bitches!

Knitting Factory NY blows too, IMO. Shitty shitty sound.

battles just struck me as some pompous NY music school
kids trying to map their technicality to a fusion of post rock
and experimental jazz ala the chicago jazz scene.
cheesy effects, bad showmanship....and what the fuck is up
with the symbol being 7' in the air?

That cymbal is fucking awesome. The drummer's the best part of the band, he's the ex-drummer from Helmet. I love when he reaches up to slam the cymbal, I feel like the whole thing, as rehearsed as it is, is exactly what the band name says - Battles, as if all the instruments battle against each other until they find the groove and then they coexist for a bit. Very cool.

considering that prefuse is of the hiphop/IDM scene

Right on - even if a show is at a venue with seats, I'm not gonna sit down during a rock show. Screw that.

if there was something to do on your feet, it would have been fine.
whether Prefuse is considered IDM or not, that shit doesn't have a
consistent beat for more than 10 seconds at a stretch.
